In his remarks today at a rally in Fort Worth, Tex., Donald Trump knew he’d make news. “I’ve never said this before,” he declared.
We’ll await the word of the Washington Post Fact Checker on the integrity of the statement, but Trump did appear to be veering into a new talking point. A media-law talking point, that is:
One of the things I’m going to do, and this is going to make it tougher for me…but one of the things I’m going to do if I win…is I’m going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money. We’re going to open up those libel laws. So that when the New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when the Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money instead of having no chance of winning because they’re totally protected.
An attack on media law is a logical extension of Trump’s rhetoric, not to mention a threat to American democracy. After all, he has displayed a highly undemocratic annoyance with the idea that the media is independent. For months he has been attempting to get the cameras at his rallies to properly pan around the thronged arenas, the better to capture his out-of-control popularity, even when the camera operators’ job is to stay on him. He has ridiculed reporter after reporter for reporting the facts of Trump’s march through the GOP primaries. Whenever he has been busted out by investigative journalism, he has attacked the institutions that have compiled it.

Damn, you found me out. The celebrity of Trump has swept me off my feet and changed me from a lifelong conservative to a big government fascist.
Now that I’m cured, I’ll go back to my loyal support of the GOP, the party that has been so effective in stopping the libs from putting us under the yoke of big government.
The largely democratic/progressive press tends to put hit pieces out right before elections; only to find out after the election, that they misquoted in error, etc.
They do dishonest reporting to sway elections and then go, ooops, well, that was not exactly true.

It is the press and the Uniparty which is out to destroy our Republic. I’m sick of these hit pieces day in and day out, and wonder why Jim keeps allowing this garbage to be posted. Those who continue to post them are just part of the left. They don’t see it, but they are.
Just like you are not allowed to shout, FIRE, in a crowded movie theater, there should be some limits on what a paper can publish which can not be substantiated.

Somehow the United States managed to make it through from 1789 to 1964 before Justice William Brennan took it upon himself to virtually eliminate and deny the right of public figures to defend their reputations against any and all libel and slander no matter how unjust. Why cannot a more just balance and restoral of truth and justice be achieved?

That is not what Trump proposed. What he proposed was partially restoring the balance of power and responsibility that existed before Justice William Brennan destroyed it in 1964 with the New York Times v. Sullivan case.
Get a grip on reality yourself! I looked at the post you pointed me too. All of those things are already covered by current libel statues. You need to be afraid when Trump starts to talk about limiting freedoms. What will you think when he comes for your liberty. And, with some of the things he has said and done, I think the Hitler comparison is very apropriate. Do I think he will become another Hitler? Probably not. But is there enough danger to be worried? Absolutely.
It just seems like all of you guys jump in lockstep with Trump, no matter what he says. Tell me, is there anything that he has said or acts that troubles you? If you are afraid to say so publicly feel free to send me a private note. I am honest enough to know that Cruz is not the the reincarnation of Reagan, although I think he is a good man. I don’t agree with him about everything. But can you tell me anything that you disagree with Trump about? If not, you need to be searching your soul concerning someone that you can’t find any differences.

The 1st amendment doesn’t allow for willful, false, and malicious attacks. We have had libel and slander laws already on the books for eons. It would be nice to see them enforced. The media has gotten away with it for way too long.
