When Marco Rubio attacked Donald Trump on the debate stage this week for using undocumented Polish workers to build Trump Tower, the developer shrugged it off.
"He brings up something from 30 years ago," Trump shot back. "It worked out very well. Everybody was happy."
But a look into the history of the Trump Tower, the crown jewel of the real-estate mogul's empire, reveals the beginnings of the 68-story building were, in fact, rooted in the back-breaking labor of 150-odd Polish immigrants most working illegally, some without full pay.
"It's constructed on the blood, sweat and tears of the Polish Brigade, as they were known in the industry," said attorney Wendy Sloan, who sued Trump and his contractor for union pension violations on the project. . .

The special interests that Trump donates to and works “special” deals with? But that’s OK, its just being a big businessman, right?
No, the union did not hire them. That doesn't even make sense.
Construction unions were run by the five families—gangsters. Give it a rest.
Next you’ll be slamming Giuliani for associating with the Mafia in court.
You learn that from the Donald?
‘Would be nice to donate some of that paid Trump poster fee to Free Republic.’
Nice compliment. Thank you.
Nope. I don’t even email to anyone on the Trump campaign let alone ask them to pay me.
In fact, when I posted late last year, I was bashing Trump. And I have agreed with some criticisms frequently, such as Big Ethanol.
From the story:
Court records make clear the contractor who hired the men knew he was using undocumented workers without Social Security numbers.
They were illegals.
Here’s what happens in building large projects in NYC.
Trump hires a general contractor to build the building. They, in turn, hire the trade contractors that build the building. Demolition work in the 1980s and 1990s was mainly a polish occupied labor force (along with the Italians). More likely than not, Trump would not be able to hire a GC that didn’t engage a subcontractor that was not polish back then.
The owner doesn’t screen for subcontractor employees. The GC does. More likely than not, Trump had no idea that the GC was hiring illegals.
Actually, your picture is incorrect. The Trump Tower was NOT built with Polish workers. The Poles worked through a sub contractor that was hired to TEAR DOWN the existing building before TRUMP TOWER was built.
Please state the facts correctly. The Polish workers DID NOT BUILD Trump Tower, but were the wrecking crew for the previous building. I will be happy if you would change your incorrect image. You would not want to be branded as a lying Cruz supporter now would you?
Trump knew.
The title of the article is “Trump Tower Got its Start with Illegal Aliens”. My picture and caption fits perfectly with that theme.
That is what I say. Who cares?
The country is on the verge of destruction, and I am supposed to care that a subcontractor hired 150 guys from Poland thirty years ago? Sheesh.
‘The union hired them.’
Or do you mean to say that the union is heavily involved with employment and essentially hires them?
Union contracts can get very constraining for an employer as I understand it.
E.S.P. like Rubio..
Did employers even have to check citizenship of employees in construction back then?
But Trump did know.
I’m not a Trump supporter, but this charge is complete hooey. Politifact, hardly a Trump supporting site, looked into it...
Our ruling
Rubio said Trump “hired from Poland and he had to pay a million dollars or so in a judgment.”
It was Trumps contractor, not Trump himself, who hired 200 undocumented Polish workers to demolish a building to make room for Trump Tower in Manhattan. Trump said he didnt know. The lawsuit sought $1 million in damages, and a judge ruled that Trump had to pay $325,000 plus interest.
But the case was appealed and before it was retried, Trump settled the case out of court, so its unclear how much he ended up doling out.
Rubios statement is partially accurate but missing that context. We rate Rubios claim Half True.
...I’d say “half true” is being generous to Rubio. Aside from the fact that the fault lay with the contractor and Trump was sued because he was the one with deep pockets, Rubio claimed Trump paid a $1 million fine, as if it were a criminal punishment. It was actually a civil damage award of an undisclosed amount, and since Trump was appealing a $325,000 judgment, I doubt that he settled for over three times that.
God knows, I don’t want Trump to be the nominee, but this particular attack is so lame that when you know the details, you just shake your head that you wasted your time reading about it. Rubio should’ve left this alone, or at least not encouraged people to Google it. If you do, you find out what a big nothingburger it is.
The title of the article is Trump Tower Got its Start with Illegal Aliens. My picture and caption fits perfectly with that theme.
The picture though is still incorrect. Jeez, sounds like a DU stunt. Just as long as it fits the narrative, eh?
I don’t know much about union workers and nothing about how it works in NY. In California my brother worked as a roofer out of a union hall. An employer would tell the union hall how many people they needed, union would send them. In other words, an employer didn’t interview, vet employees, the union hall did.
GGG: “fake but accurate!”
Yet ANOTHER good reason to VOTE TRUMP!
