Apple is Not Such a Freedom Fighter in China
LA Times/Slashdot ^

Posted on 02/26/2016 2:28:05 PM PST by Carismar

Though loudly resisting the American government's attempts to make it help break into the phone of a dead scumbag, Apple is very accommodating of the Chinese government's attempts to keep tabs on the citizenry's communications. Apple has censored apps that wouldn't pass muster with the Chinese government, moved local user data onto servers operated by the state-owned China Telecom, and submitted to Chinese audits. According to James Lewis, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, "I can't imagine the Chinese would tolerate end-to-end encryption or a refusal to cooperate with their police, particularly in a terrorism case." Why the accommodation there?

LA Times.
Which begs the question-why are the Feds so hell bent on getting a backdoor into iPhones? I don't think it has a thing to do with fighting terrorism.

Cook doesn’t seem very patriotic beyond his own definition of patriotic. So what if the FBI screwed up. They probably did their best with the Government brains on hand.

Seeing how Cook is acting, it’s no wonder they tried on their own without asking for Apple’s help. I would imagine Cook is doing this on his own. I would guess that the bulk of Apple Employee’s disagree with him.

Narcissism seems to be the common denominator in the gay community.

Hahahahaha...yeah, playing with someone who looks like ya and has the same essentials leads quite a few to that conclusion.

Apple will protect dead killers in the U.S., but will offer up live freedom fighters in China.

I understand the Chinese wanting to spy on all their peeps bcz thats what totalitarians do.

Why should we believe the FBI wants to be any different? Oh, for our safety.

There is no backdoor in the I-phone in China. But even so, what is the argument? That a company trying to operate in a communist country should expect no better treatment here in America?

Stupid argument.

This is such American-wanna-be-facist BS. Ask ANY American company if they are treated exactly the same in foreign countries as they are here in America and if they make accommodations.

For starters, lets start with every company doing business in Saudi Arabia. DO they demand entry for a non muslim employee into Mecca? Hell, the US government itself making this argument through its think tank minions asks military women to wear scarves, not drive in certain areas, dress modestly, etc.

This is the norm for every American company. Go Apple.

Did you ever see China’s Bill of Rights?

I don’t much care how Apple works in China.

Leave the U.S. Gov’t OUT of my personal communications!

All that matters to them is making a PR gain out of this. They don't give a rat's patoot about protecting individual privacy. They do care very much about keeping their profit margins high, though, and catering to China while "standing up" to the FBI is exactly the sort of shell game Apple has always excelled at.

The government, according to Cook, has every right to force you to bake a cake for queers who want a "wedding cake", but no right to demand that Apple access the data in a phone used by murderous terrorists after the terrorists are dead and gone.

The only people they're providing privacy protection for are the friends and contacts of the terrorists, not anyone else, not the public at large.

Wait until someone commits a "hate crime" against some fudge packer and has an iPhone the prosecutor doesn't have a way to unlock. Apple will fall all over themselves to provide any assistance they can in order to prosecute whoever dares to insult fudge packers individually or as a group.

“why are the Feds so hell bent on getting a backdoor into iPhones? I don’t think it has a thing to do with fighting terrorism.”

How dare you suggest they don’t want to keep us safe from the over 1.5 million moslems they have imported since 9/11? Just because they gave ISIS those Toyota trucks with STate department money, switched sides and started supporting Al Qeida in Libya and Syria, armed the cartels, promoted Major Hassan knowing he was emailing jihad with Anwar Al-alaki, let the Boston Bombers back in knowing they were radicalized in Dagestan, removed all references to islam in FBI terror training, designated Vets, TEA, Paul Voters, etc as a terror threat, let this woman terrorist in while scrupulously avoiding looking at her facebook page,,etc ad nauseum.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t sincere. Remember, 9/11, wave the flag, if you see something say something, only criminals need privacy, a police state is a safe state.

Shame on you/s

I’d been wondering about how Apple functioned in China. The Commies have a way of slapping the tech firms around to get the cooperation they want and few have resisted.

China is a communist dictatorship. Is that what we want here, or do we want Apple to resist the FBI’s attempt to invade our privacy?
