Donald J. Trumpâs Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach describes itself as âone of the most highly regarded private clubs in the world,â and it is not just the very-well-to-do who want to get in.
Since 2010, nearly 300 United States residents have applied or been referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there. But according to federal records, only 17 have been hired.
In all but a handful of cases, Mar-a-Lago sought to fill the jobs with hundreds of foreign guest workers from Romania and other countries.
In his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, Mr. Trump has stoked his crowds by promising to bring back jobs that have been snatched by illegal immigrants or outsourced by corporations, and voters worried about immigration have been his strongest backers.
But he has also pursued more than 500 visas for foreign workers at Mar-a-Lago since 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor, while hundreds of domestic applicants failed to get the same jobs.
The visas are issued through one of a handful of legal and often-debated programs through which employers can temporarily hire foreign workers when American labor is not available. As part of its applications for the visas submitted to the Labor Department, Mr. Trumpâs Mar-a-Lago attested that in the vast majority of cases it was unable to fill the positions with American workers, or, as he told MSNBCâs âMorning Joeâ in September, âgetting help in Palm Beach during the season is almost impossible.â
Asked why his club must seek so many foreign workers when Americans have applied for the same positions, Mr. Trump said in a telephone interview from Mar-a-Lago this month: âThe only reason they wouldnât get a callback is that they werenât qualified, for some reason.â

OMG! Trump follows the law! Call the cops!
Iâm an employer in Minnesota. I could increase my business if I had a reliable supply of workers, which I donât. Trying to hire laborers and general help is very difficult these days. Many people donât want to work. And why would they work when they can make a good living off handouts? The gimmedat generation is destroying many American industries
Exactly. They might get their hands dirty or something. And you mean we have to work when it’s hot or cold or raining or windy?? Screw that, I’m going back to the couch in moms basement where it is safe.
17/300 - those are amazingly low numbers, so clearly something is going on, although it doesn’t necessarily mean something is amiss.
Seems to me most, if not all, of these applicants would know beforehand what the wages were, so to say the pay was too low is probably not a factor.
Maybe most of these people didn’t get an offer was because of their attitude or criminal record or lack of experience.
Mr. Trump does not get involved in the hiring at the local level I wouldn’t think. We should give the appropriate managers an opportunity to explain if these numbers are accurate and, if so, why this is.
Let us all pray that Trump (Blessed is his name) has the wisdom to RELEASE HIS TAX INFORMATION NOW so that its contents can be vetted & aired out now instead of by the ‘RATS in October & November.
so trump is or is not a complete, lying hypocrite, for bashing other for doing the same thing he does (hiring cheap foreigners for jobs Americans want)?
to paraphrase Mr Trump, he loves his dumb voters lol
“Getting American workers in Palm Beach is quite possible if you offer a high enough wage.”
I can see you’ve never tried hiring millennials for low-skilled work. Not as easy to get them to show up on time as you think, regardless of what you pay them.
I have heard that from people I do business with. The American work ethic should be on the Endangered Species list.
For sure. They take laziness to a new level.
But if anyone brings it up, he'll threated to sue - or punch them in the face - or say they're ugly - or say they're lying - or say they're a baby - or call them a loser.
It’s also hypocritical to bash those who support H1-B programs... When your businesses take advantage of said programs.
“For sure. They take laziness to a new level.”
Just getting them to STOP TEXTING for 5 minutes so you can explain to them how to put out grease fire is a MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT.
Trump often talk about how he had to buy TV from South Korea and he wasn’t happy about it. This is no different. You’re a businessman and you do what’s economical
But to many Trump supporters, when you don't hire foreigners, then wages will rise to levels that will make those jobs attractive to average Americans.
You can't have living/rising/attractive wages and be cost effective.
I had a crew of them in an IT service department. Most days I wanted to kill them.
I was pretty sure that the only reason Romney released his tax records to the public was because he was accused of not paying his taxes. Trump isn’t being accused of not paying his taxes.
They are here LEGALLY!
