Trump embraces positions on economics and foreign policy anathema to most conservative politicians. He is an ardent critic of recent free-trade agreements, opposes cuts to Social Security and Medicare, has been even more vocal than many Democrats in criticizing President George W. Bush and the Iraq War, and even endorses the Democratsâ long-standing call for government negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to drive down drug costs....
The key lies in that rejection of conservative economic and fiscal orthodoxy (except in his endorsement of big tax cuts). But unlike Democrats, Trump is a sharp critic of illegal immigration, multiculturalism and âpolitical correctness.â This is why dreams of a populist alliance between supporters of Trump and Bernie Sanders will be stillborn, as Thomas B. Edsall pointed out in the New York Times.

Trump cleverly mixes popular liberal and conservative bromides into a potent political brew. But unlike populists on the Left, he vehemently rejects illegal immigration, multiculturalism and political correctness. He offers something to every one of all ideological persuasions and classes. Trump's appeal is deep and broad-based. Hence, his impressive wins that defy political gravity just like his world view resists simple categorization.

That “bait” is the combination of economic populism and nationalism that carried Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan to the White House.

Donald Trump tells immigrant advocates "You've convinced me"
...Trump told the trio "You've convinced me."
The meeting comes several weeks after Trump - one of the nation's most prominent conservative voices - delivered a key note address on immigration reform in Iowa
and warned that that the Senate's current immigration bill "could be a death wish" for Republicans, who "need to 'do the right thing' ."
Trump: U.S. should accept some Syrian refugees
Donald Trump thinks the United States should accept some refugees from Syria due to the "unbelievable humanitarian problem." ...
Trump ... said Tuesday evening that though the migrants could pose a security risk -- floating the idea that there may be individuals with ties to Islamic militants --
he supported allowing them into America. ...

Congress must protect our borders first.
Amnesty should be done only if the border is secure and illegal immigration has stopped.

Message to the GOP: Trump supports amnesty
... On the Kelly File Thursday, Trump's son Eric expressed frustration that the media overlooks this: The point isn't just deporting them, it's deporting them and letting them back in legally.
He's been so clear about that and I know the liberal media wants to misconstrue it,
but its deporting them and letting them back legally.
Eric Trump is right.
His father has been crystal clear that he wants all the illegals to return and live in America.
Listen closely to what Trump is actually proposing.
In an interview with CNN's Dana Bash earlier this year, Trump explained his plan this way: I would get people out and then have an expedited way of getting them back into the country so they can be legal ...
A lot of these people are helping us ... and sometimes it's jobs a citizen of the United States doesn't want to do.
I want to move 'em out, and we're going to move 'em back in and let them be legal.
Donald Trump's companies sought visas to import at least 1,100 workers
... Trump owns companies that have sought to import at least 1,100 foreign workers on temporary visas since 2000,
according to U.S. Department of Labor data reviewed by Reuters.
Most of the applications were approved, the data show.
Nine companies majority-owned by Trump have sought to bring in foreign waitresses, cooks, vineyard workers and other laborers on temporary work-visa programs administered by the Labor Department.
The candidate's foreign talent hunt included applications for an assistant golf-course superintendent, an assistant hotel manager and a banquet manager.
Two of his companies, Trump Model Management and Trump Management Group LLC, have sought visas for nearly 250 foreign fashion models, the records show.
Trump's presidential campaign and a lawyer for the businessman declined to comment.
The Mar-a-Lago Club could not be reached for comment.

Keeping the welfare state for Americans not for undeserving foreigners.
That’s the essence of Trump’s social platform.

Don't shoot the messenger.
That's the truth though: even majorities of self-identified Tea Party members want Social Security and Medicare preserved.
There is no conceivable political coalition that is going to end Social Security or push everyone in a catastrophic-only health insurance plan, or any of the other more libertarian aspects of conservative economic policy.
It just isn't going to happen.

We must find solutions for our vulnerable and disadvantaged without adopting socialism.
It has failed elsewhere. It must be based on human compassion, making opportunities and resources available to every one and ensuring people’s livelihoods are not adversely impacted by globalization.
Neoliberalism is as disastrous as socialism. We must chart a middle path out of our systemic crisis.

Trump is a populist, not a conservative. But he is seeking to get elected by conservatives and has pledged to govern conservatively. I believe he intends to keeps his word.
That being said, if he wins the nomination, he is going to need to solidify the base by picking a solidly conservative VP. This could be Cruz.
