Guests at the first American Black Film Festival Honors are ready for Chris Rock to shake up the Oscars.
Don Cheadle, Ice Cube, Adina Porter and Michelle Mitchenor are among the entertainers eager to hear the comedian's take on Hollywood's diversity crisis when he hosts Sunday's Academy Awards.
"I think this could be a watershed moment for what he does, and there's nobody better suited to do it, so I hope he goes in," Cheadle said Sunday at the inaugural ABFF awards ceremony, where he accepted the Excellence in the Arts award. "I hope he skewers everybody, which is what he's good at doing."
The ABFF Honors were produced in conjunction with Black Entertainment Television to recognize film and TV productions featuring African-Americans as stars or lead creative talents.
"Given the atmosphere of the lack of diversity for the Oscars, I think this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the filmmakers who are brown, black, who are female or diverse in one way or the other or the Oscars won't," said actor Joe Morton. "So this is our Oscar."
The American Black Film Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary in June. The organization and BET created the ABFF honors this year to celebrate performances overlooked by traditional awards shows.
"When you feel that a section of the art or artists are not being appreciated, there's a need for an award show like this," actor O'Shea Jackson Jr., a star of "Straight Outta Compton," said Sunday. "We gotta get our piece of this art their credit due and award shows like this, programs like BET, they help further our people in this creative landscape of cinema."
Some high-profile black entertainers, including Jada Pinkett Smith, have called for a boycott of the Academy Awards...

Well, actually, no. Just kidding. I am going to be very busy during this year's Oscar telecast. I have to rearrange my sock drawer.
I know I will be missing out at experiencing more vibrant "black culture" and "diversity", but those socks really have to be rearranged.
Maybe black actors want to go back to the good-old days of when they were depicted as criminals, buffoons, or the hired help. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
Blacks are 13% of the population, of all oscars awarded they have won 15%.
The BET awards white have won zero.
And both viewers of that soooo yesterday show might even stay tuned.
Well there’s a nasty skank for you ...
I stopped watching the “pat me on my back” shows during Bush 41 when the movies that won mostly sucked and they allowed the morons to speak other than to say “thank you”.
Imagine how that would look if she weren’t so “talented”....
This could be the 30th consecutive year I’ve missed the Oscars.....
When people keep feeding you a "victim mentality" line, you get addicted to it. Like heroin, it is never enough.
Look at most of what we label "black culture" today. It is a bitter stew of pride, fornication, violence, profanity, and selfishness.
Just keep it out of my living room television.
And the great part about being a victim is you are never responsible for your actions. Not to your fellow human beings, not to your family, not to your nation, not to your employer, not to the law. Not to God.
Just what I need, to get lectured to by Chris Rock. Parcheesi is looking better and better.
See post #8.
Disgusting. I’m glad I missed it.
I’ll be missing the oscars as usual, too.
Black Culture = Stripper Culture.
DOJ statistics show that between 1980 and 2008, black people committed 52% of homicides.
LOL.
Yes.
I’m always surprised that they haven’t left anything on the stage when they’re done.

#Black Poopies Matter!
I was just a kid, but still can recall the shear heartfelt joy of Mr. Poitier when he won for 'Lilly's of the Field'. He showed a lot of class in those days, far more then we are seeing from the perpetual whiners we have today.
“Guests at the first American Black Film Festival Honors are ready for Chris Rock to shake up the Oscars.”
Irony is completely lost on these “people.”
Who’s holding a gun to anybody’s head to watch any of this shit anyway? The last Oscar ceremony I’ve watched was the controversial George C Scott event...and I think that was back in ‘71...right?
Snoop and Spike. Sounds like a couple of dogs.
Calls of racism coming from the American Black Film Festival doesn’t hold much water for me.
