Rubio inherits establishment support but is on a narrow path to stop Trump

By Sean Sullivan February 22 at 2:20 PM

LAS VEGAS — Mainstream Republican donors and elected officials are swiftly flocking to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) amid a growing sense that is he is the last best chance to prevent Donald Trump from running away with the Republican nomination.

But Rubio’s path remains narrow and perilous. He has yet to win a state, and a raft of major March 1 contests known as “Super Tuesday” offers few obvious chances for him to do so. And if Trump keeps racking up wins, it will become more difficult to blunt his progress.

Increasingly, there is a recognition among Republican elites that if Trump is not slowed by the middle of March, it may be too late to prevent him from winning the nomination.

“The window is closing, and we need to move now,” said Bobbie Kilberg, a major Republican donor who lined up behind Rubio after former Florida governor Jeb Bush ended his campaign on Saturday.

Fielding questions from reporters here Monday morning, Rubio wasn’t predicting any imminent victories.

You know, I have never seen Rubio smile while giving a speech - he comes off like he is either angry or nervous and has to say everything really fast and get it out before he tongue ties himself. I don't think his speaking style is anywhere near embraceable for people.

Also, I know this is tin foil hat like - but I fear for Trump's life going forward at the hands of some 'long gunmen' or an airplane mishap.

Inherits?

How ignorant. Voters go where they want. I’m betting Bush supporters, like many others, are looking for a candidate on a winning trajectory. Right now that is indisputably Trump. I just hope Bush’s handlers don’t weasel their way into any level of Trump’s organization.

Is there a word stronger than incompetent? Whatever it is, Bush’s handlers are the milk carton description of that word.

All the Stop Trump people I see on TV talk like they have a lot of time to do it. They talk about getting Kasich and Carson to drop out, consolidate what they insist on calling the “anti-Trump” vote, launch a big opposition research operation into Trump’s background, wage a massive anti-Trump ad campaign. They don’t seem to realize that tomorrow there’s NV, next Tuesday is Super Tuesday with 14 contests, then there are contests on March 5, 6, 8, and 12, then there are the first WINNER TAKE ALL contests on March 15.

They don’t seem to realize that they’ve already spend millions on anti-Trump ads in IA, NH and SC, without much effect. There has been hundreds of old Trump comments from 10-30 years ago in circulation, and he’s written 3 books, his life seems to be pretty much an open-book.

Before they can get their anti-Trump operation off the drawing-board, a whole flock of primaries and caucuses will have already passed, and Trump may have won the vast majority of them.

They were counting on Bush or Rubio to do a hail mary out of NHamp or SouCar and both failed. Bush’s collapsed sucked the money wealth out of the GOPe donor base and confused the establishment as to who to back.

Programmers are working on a software upgrade for the Marco Ruboto 3000 that will hopefully fix this.

On Monday, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) endorsed Rubio. In Miami, Republican Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Curbelo and former congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart - all of whom had backed Bush - also announced their support.

On the donor side, in addition to Kilberg, former ambassador Francis Rooney, who gave more than $2 million to a pro-Bush super PAC through his holding company, is now with Rubio. So is financial industry executive Muneer Satter, who also made a big investment on behalf of Bush.

Good for Marco...we all know how much help these clowns were to Jeb!

With Trump's reputed talent for hiring the best, I wouldn't expect him to give any of those weasels the time of day.

consolidate what they insist on calling the "anti-Trump" vote,

Yeah...it's all 'anti Trump' vote, never anti-Rubio or anti-Cruz. They're a bunch of losers! Yuuuge losers!

Before they can get their anti-Trump operation off the drawing-board, a whole flock of primaries and caucuses will have already passed, and Trump may have won the vast majority of them.

I don't think they have a working idea of the speed of the calendar among the bunch of them. Things are happening pretty fast now...

Cruz is my first choice, but his people have caused so many self-inflicted wounds, I think he is in trouble. Still don’t trust Trump to do what he claims he will, If Rubio was a lot stronger on border security and illegal immigrants, I could possibly support him as a second option, but he is the weakest in those areas of all the remaining candidates.

Two major concerns abut Trump is how reliable is he on nominating truly conservative Justices. After all, most of his entire life has been greatly inconsistent policy positions.

As far as electability goes, Trump does have some big problems once he is truly vetted. Anyone who thinks the Democrats are not going to go after him for his actual Mafia and Russian mob connections is naive. I don’t understand why Cruz and Rubio have not brought that subject up. Ther is no doubt in my mind that out enemies have lots of extortion material on Hillary, but the Russians and the Mafia also have penty on Trump; and they will use it.

Rubio’s path to the nomination is extremely narrow - I will not under any circumstances vote for him because of his Senate campaign lies about Amnesty and his support for the Gang of Eight bill.

At least I don’t fear for Trump’s life. Obama’s minions are no more likely to knock off Trump than they were to have Scalia killed. We know just how moral and honorable Obama’s obedient little followers are, so I have no more concern for Trump’s safety than I have about the IRS auditing me in retaliation for my comments.

No it isn’t. Cruz photoshopped his head. Same in the gay bath house picture. Wait, that one wasn’t photoshopped?

Anyone who thinks the Democrats are not going to go after him for his actual Mafia and Russian mob connections is naive. - If those were real Giuliani would not be a Trump confidant. As an Italian American, Giuliani fought a holy war against the mob in New York so any ties trump has/had would be circumstantial. Everyone who bought cement in NYC bought it from mob front companies. That does not mean Trump was tied to the mob.

Your concern is mine as well.
My first choice is Cruz, however Trump clearly has clearly stirred up the hornet's nest of the right enemies: both Political parties, the Main Stream Media, and the Political Consultant class. That, and his ability to make Politically Incorrect Statements (vs. the mealy mouthed mush spoken by most politicians) and his unpublicized support for military and other charities - makes him high on my list - his leftward tilt notwithstanding.

But you are right, he is not 'owned', and I am concerned that the 'owners' don't like the idea of someone like that getting into the Executive Office.

There was one mobster who Trmp gave an office to after he got out of prison on the same floor Trump had his own office in his NYC Trump Tower. That’s not evidence of Trump having mob connections?

A mobster who worked with the FBI. But you always hammer your point on that selectively, no matter how often it is debunked.
