Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.
Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.
He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

Bingo! I don’t have sympathy for people who default on paying back their loans but the timing of this is political it would seem.
Great post BUMP!
That is NOT the entire story, he was also wanted on a federal contempt of court charge. He failed to show up for a federal court deposition. As that P/O’d the judge who swore out the warrant on him, but also had back [29 years] worth of unpaid student loans.
There is a big difference between public debt and private debt.
He volunteered for this debt. Public debt forced on the public is way different. Public debt forces debt slavery without consent most times. Did you want to fund the money going to hostile governments in the Middle East such as Pakistan? Didnt think so. That is a debt forced on you without your consent.
This is clearly some one who choose to put himself in the situation he is in. Therefore he is getting what he choose.
Debtor’s prison.
I looked it up and you are right.
They have evidently changed the law since I was a pre-Law major in the 1980’s.
One of my professors at UT-Austin used to rail on about Texas was a land of deadbeats because of this.
Or maybe he was wrong?
Hope and change.
Glad I paid all mine completely, just wish I had not wasted those years in College.
Sounds like way more than $1500 was spent trying to collect the $1500. lolz
They just abolished the debtors' prison (part of the regular jail here) one month ago. Mostly delinquent child support cases. I think inmates served only a night or a weekend generally; sad to see it go. It WAS an incentive to pay up.
I’m going to guess they got a default judgment after they evidence he was served.
At least 30 days later they order him to appear at a`proceeding supplemental to execution upon the judgment.
He blows that off.
They show good service and serve him with an order to appear and show cause why he shouldn’t be held in contempt for failing to show for his pro supp.
He blows that off.
They show good service then they get the judge to issue an arrest warrant for contempt of court.
Happens every day. Pay your dam loans back like the rest of us.
Er, no...
Ya better start building more prisons with lots of cages.
since when did we have debtors prison ?
good question.
thot we once fought over that
Since 1913 when the IRS was created.
will he be sent to Australia?
He should pay it back, but not have jackbooted thugs come after him
That right there’s funny.
I don’t care who you are.
