Trump asks voters to boycott Apple: 'I think that's a great idea'
Washington Examiner ^ | 19 Feb 16 | GABBY MORRONGIELLO

Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.

"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"

"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.

"Boycott Apple," he repeated.

"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."

The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."

"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information – I think that's a great idea."

People are eager to jump to that conclusion but I just saw a discussion on Fox on this matter.

It is not that simple.

The problem is that people do not trust the government and this technology has prosecutors salivating in criminal matters.

There may come a time, if we elect Cruz, when we can trust the government but I don’t want a backdoor opened into my phone.

Sometimes I talk to my son for an hour about private matters.

And you know the government will not ask them to use this knowledge more often and for lesser cases how, exactly?

Exactly. One of Apple's biggest legal arguments in this case is that the feds' request that they create a new version of iOS (which would enable the phone to be unlocked using brute force techniques) creates an "unreasonable burden." As soon as Apple creates the version of iOS the feds are seeking here, you can bet that any time the feds want info from a locked phone in the future, they would run to court arguing that "we know for a fact that Apple possesses a software tool that would enable us to unlock this phone," and thus that there is no additional burden from requiring them to use the software again.

Negotiation with Cook/ Apple to break the security for that one phone.

Watch Cook offer to crack the codes for that one phone in an Apple lab with FBI agents monitoring but not getting the decipher key/code.

The feds can provide a search warrant for what is in that one phone with the above provisions of safety/concerns for Cook/Apple.

Technical thread on the topic. If this article is true, claiming that Apple just CAN’T break the encryption on a terrorists’ phone (which makes no sense), then Apple is an ass and we are so screwed. I’m going with “someone is lying” here.

How many times have you heard that?

In this case only.

No, no we would never invade anyone else’s privacy with this technology.

I think this would be thoroughly discussed by people who know stuff and I don’t include Trump in that group.

He’s simply milking the popular viewpoint for votes.

It’s what he does.

This would be justified in a war context, but it’s being treated in a crime context.

We still trust the government with war, but also expect it to call war, war. Don’t lie to us that this is crime fighting.

Absolutely.

The FBI is asking Apple to do nothing to remove the privacy features. They are requesting - IN THIS CASE ONLY - to remove the limit on the number of retries. 15 minutes work for a programmer. Once that’s done, the FBI can use it’s existing tools to crack the password and then decrypt the information on this TERRORISTS PHONE. No different than in the past.

Wow....is the anointed one now going to dictate what products his followers use?

So saying "I think it's a good idea" is dictating?

I’ve read so many stories about what the FBI is asking of Apple I don’t know what to believe. It just seems the FBI should be able to crack it themselves since they are supposed to be the best.

Treat war as war.

How will that sentiment play out when their are those in power believing right wing gun toters are a bigger threat than Islamists? Are you comfortable with going there?

This sounds like it should be a CIA job. Not an FBI one.

...conseravtives in IT NEVER liked the government having the keys.

From a proprietary interest standpoint, one would think the law supports the view you describe.

Do you know whether Apple has argued it will not disclose trade secrets but will give the USG the information it requests pursuant to a court order, if that information is available?

A side issue may be that if the hardware is manufactured in China and it has the software (undoubtedly)...those clever fella's already have the keys.

If a government can’t be trusted with war on the level of calling war war, then we’re scrod anyhow. We mucked it up bad enough.

Mr Trump, for all his smarts and campaigning skill, can be seriously wrong at times.

Please do not believe everything Van De what says.

He is a total Trump freak.

Ted did not say anything of the kind. He did discuss the issue on CNN and discussed what Apple should do.
