Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.
"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"
"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.
"Boycott Apple," he repeated.
"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."
The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."
"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information â I think that's a great idea."
Be nice if the government put that much effort into actually keeping the terrorists out of the country in the first place.
Well yes and no.
Cruz did not say boycott Apple.
Cruz simply said Apple should honor the court order - which they should - if they can.
But the fact is, there is no back door to honor the court order with.
You are comparing Apples to oranges.
Trump said everyone should boycott Apple. Cruz said no such thing.
Cruz did say Apple should honor a legal court order. Which is true. The key thing though, there is no back door to unlock the data. On that Cruz was misinformed. So Apple can’t comply without extreme measures which they are not obligated to do.
Calling for a boycott of Apple is not the same thing and you know it. Trump stepped in it here.
Knowing what your talking about might be helpful...
I have no earthly clue but I am guessing McAfee does. :-)
It is very likely the government can remove the flash memory chip in the phone and save the contents. After doing so they can wipe them out over and over again trying to break the code without the risk of losing the original encrypted data.
Oh. My. God! This is “When Cults Collide!” How in the heck does an Apple fanboi & Trump fanboi reconcile this? It’s like finding out your wife is cheating on you with a woman... and that she’s a man! Where the heck did I put the popcorn?
Trump should be backing Apple against Obuma and his state-sponsored terrorists in the FBI. Dummy.
Screw it. We’re heading for America Revolution 2.0 or secession regardless of who gets elected president. Buy cans of Campbell’s tomato soup while you can.
Feeling the Bern are you?
BTW, ad hominem is a pretty good description of your post, too (delegitimizing the person rather than their statement). So I figure I'm wasting my time speaking to you in a reasonable fashion. But hope springs eternal...
Apparently he hasn’t read this:
RE: Nah. I’m just a fan of reasoned arguments.
Don’t ever make me spill my beer in laughter like that...never. Reasoned? LOL.
Loose canon
Why is NO ONE bring out the fact that the FBI had these guys on their radar long before they went on the rampage - they were watching them/their movements and contacts.
BUT
the ‘buumer administration called them OFF - said stop to surveillance - it’s pro-filing.
Had they not been called off, they would likely have discovered the illusive third man - probably been able to stop the shooting all together -
The Administration and their muzzie-coddling is to blame here.
Hello?
Anyone?
The risk isn't losing the encrypted data - it is the risk of losing the encryption KEY. That key is a taken from a combination of the pin/passcode (which can either be numeric or alphanumeric in iOS 9), a 128-character identifier unique to the specific phone, and a random number known as a "salt". This combination of characters is then run through an algorithm to devise the actual encryption key. If the key is erased from the phone, it is virtually impossible to recreate the same key. Even if you knew the identifier and the pin and tried to recreate the key, you wouldn't get the same one because the "salt" would be different.
I am in total agreement with you. Which Presidential candidate wants to limit their flow into our country?
The FBI could care less if this phone is decrypted, they want to get rid of privacy from all phones. Anyone that is still paying attention cannot think that the US government cares a whit about protecting and serving the public good. WE are the fascist government our ancestors warned us about.
