Donald Trump on Friday urged a roomful of voters to boycott the tech giant Apple so long as its chief executive, Tim Cook, refuses to comply with a court order to assist the FBI with hacking into the cell phone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.
"First of all Apple better give the security for that phone," the Republican presidential hopeful said during a campaign rally in Pawleys Island, S.C. "What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time they give that security number. How do you like that?"
"I just thought of it," Trump noted, drawing applause.
"Boycott Apple," he repeated.
"Here's the thing, the phone's not even owned by this young thug that killed people," Trump said, claiming that the cell phone used by Farook is instead "owned by the federal government."
The billionaire suggested that Cook "is looking to do a big number... to show how liberal he is."
"We gotta get to the bottom of it, but we're not going to get to the bottom of it unless we use common sense," Trump said. "So I like the idea of boycotting Apple until such time as they give that information â I think that's a great idea."
Bingo
Yep. He's definitely on the wrong side of the issue here. The people supporting Trump aren't demanding to have their iPhones cracked open.
Sometimes Donald really needs to keep his yap shut until he's brushed up a little bit.
The problem is that the data is encrypted, and too many bad password attempts will delete the encryption keys - making the data permanently inaccessible. The FBI wants Apple to create a tool that will bypass that security. I’m not even sure such a tool can be created, but it is an accepted fact that it does not now exist. So the question becomes, do we want to set the precedent that the government can force you to create something new, even against your will? I am not talking about forcing you to turn over something you already have - this would be creating something completely new.
I will not boycott Apple.
However, I believe that Apple should unlock the phone, retrieve all data, print a hard copy for the FBI and destroy the phone. In the end, Apple will lose this battle so they better figure out a reasonable compromise.
I can see this happening in extraordinary circumstances...On an individual basis...However those circumstances must be approved for each case not by a judge nor an ABC agency...Perhaps by Congress as a whole...
There must be a way the code can be cracked a phone at a time so as not to jeopardize the privacy of the average American Citizen...
Trump wants to protect America at all costs...I believe as options or information becomes available to him, he will side for a position that protects America’s privacy and as well, gets the information needed to get these terrorists...
Yeah this is a dumb idea. He should be totally behind Apple for giving FEDGOV the finger.
But who else is there like you said down the thread?
If the FBI wants to crack the phone, hire someone to crack the phone. It’s an undue burden placed upon a company to reduce the security of their devices. The FBI should get off their lazy asses and do some human intelligence (HUMINT). These keyboard cops are inept. They don’t need the data on the damn phone, they are just too lazy to garner the information through sound police work.
If even that long. I'm sure every FBI agent and federal prosecutor in every district already knows a compliant judge who would sign off on the request.
Yeah, but the idea that Apple supports terrorism is pretty ridiculous.
Trump needs to rethink this. The government is after legal precedent, not the Candy Crush score on that guy’s phone. That’s about the only thing they don’t already know about him.
Apple is making billions in extra profits from selling encrypted phones. If they help the FBI bypass the encryption on this terrorist phone then it puts a big dent in this selling point. Meaning less money for the fags that populate this corporation
RE: extra profits
What the hell are extra profits? You of the mindset that the government should determine how much profit is acceptable? You sound like a socialist my FRiend.
I like that one.
I know what you are saying, but it is the FBI’s responsibility to break into the phone. They need to get busy and do it. It is not a companies responsibilty to spend money to make their job easier.
Example...if the FBI believes a gun has been disposed in a landfill, is it the landfill owners responsibility to purchase a sifter for the FBI to go through the garbage?
Bear in mind that he gets only ten tries. He thinks that he’ll figure it out by social engineering? What happens if he blows it and the phone essentially self-destructs?
I agree with you on this.
But, it might be fun to see Apple tell the FBI that they will do what I posted earlier and inform them the fee would be $1 billion, paid in advance. ;>)

Ted Cruz Says Apple Needs to Comply With the Court Order on Encrpytion, It’s All Constitutional
Thanks, I was just going to tell you I found it.
Cruz is incorrect here. He is correct that they should unlock the data under court order - if they could. But they can’t. They can only modify the OS so that the government can hack it. That is not remotely the same thing.
