British businesses could have their gas supplies cut off in order to keep households in other parts of Europe warm, under a proposed new EU law. A new "solidarity principle" would apply to gas supplies to ensure that households, healthcare and security services across Europe were maintained as a priority in the event of a severe crisis. "In practice this means member states will have to give priority to protected consumers in neighbouring countries over non-protected customers at home," Miguel Arias Canete, the EU energy commissioner, said. "We donât back legally-binding rules in this area, which is what we and others will make clear when negotiations start." "Wait a tic. Blimey, this redistribution of wealth is trickier than I thought."
Wow. This surpasses even the worst predictions I heard about the EU when I was in high school, and is surprising the friends and family I’m sharing it with.
