Donald Trump is a bigger frontrunner to be the Republican nominee than you think
Washington Post ^ | 2-18-16 | Chris Cillizza

Why isn't Trump getting the credit and coverage he deserves? Because, at root, there is still a belief within the party establishment and the ranks of the media that he will somehow implode or voters will "wise up" or "get real" or something.

A decent article that cries out for a good copy editor to correct the writer’s peculiar style.

He means coverage as the likely nominee, rather than another candidate.

It wouldn't be a scheme. The majority of Republicans don't want Trump. He will never get a majority of delegates. Settling it at the convention will be the right thing to do to satisfy the majority of rank-and-file Republicans.

in hypothetical one-on-one match ups, Trump trails both Cruz (56 percent to 40 percent) and Rubio (57 percent to 41 percent). In January, Trump was ahead of Rubio (by 7 points) but behind Cruz (by 8 points).

Trump’s line took the same drop as Cruz’s. It’s just that Trump can afford it, Cruz can’t.

Wonder which values Trump would choose in the general election? You’ll never hear him describe himself as conservative again at that point.

I am a Cruz supporter but my analysis says that Trump goes into the convention with 1,300 delegates if the current polls hold true.

Rubio is picking up the votes of people who like him for “staying above the fray”. Probably people who aren’t aware that he’s a GOPe stooge, but there will be time for that after the self-destructive venom spewing insanity of the Cruz/Roe campaign is out of the running. I hope Trump lays off Rubio until after SC.

I noticed a dip, but it wasn’t a long gradual decline like Ted’s.

As you say, Trump can afford it.

I’m also reminded that in most polls, Trump remains at or above recent polling.

Lines for both candidates here may not be reflecting reality very well.

And yet Bush described himself as one throughout his terms in office.

How’d that work out?

I do think that plays in. Rubio is also talked about favorably by some talking heads who would trash him stridently if he were in the general against Hillary.

This is all about destroy Trump and Cruz, and Trump and Cruz are playing along for the moment, seemingly.

When you’re under attack, you have to fight back. It can get messy.

"...to satisfy the majority of rank-and-file Republicans." That should read....to satisfy the majority establishment of rank-and-file Republicans....to maintain the status quo....this will let Hillary or Sanders have the Oval Office.

As someone recently said....."...there is a middle class and it is tremendous". I think there is some truth to that...at least I sure hope so.

I think the OP is asking why the GOPE isn’t getting behind Trump as they would if the same scenario had Jeb! leading. It’s a rhetorical question. Trump probably gets more than any other 3 candidates coverage combined but at least half of that coverage, probably more, is negative.

I think the Pope just gave him (Trump) a huge endorsement today.

It isn't just that the Pope was out of line. It's that Trump fired back, just like the leader of the free world should!! No focus groups, no politically correct speech watering down the response, no ambiguity. THAT'S A LEADER!!

Why aren't the wannabees supporting Trump on this one? Are they afraid they might offend someone?

Preeeeeecisely. I couldn't have said it any better. At this point, it doesn't much matter to me anymore what Trump says or does. It is as imperative for us to get him into office, as it is for "them" to keep him out.

After today’s spat with the pope, Trump will be seen by 100 million people by the end of the evening news. Trump has sucked out all the international oxygen too. Go Trump!

Who cares. Cruz will win Florida, Texas, and probably lots of the other southern states.

Maybe Americans are waking up to the fact that lawyers are worthless bloodsuckers who bill clients and provide nothing substantial in return. They are accountable to no one. America needs to be run like a business where actions have consequences.

Trump builds stuff and employs people.

And has a family that he's proud of. This is his legacy:
