A spokesman for Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, struggled Tuesday to explain why after months of praising GOP front-runner Donald Trump, the Texas lawmaker has decided now to accuse his primary rival of being unprincipled and too far to the left on certain issues.
Cruz's campaign has upped its criticism of the billionaire businessman in recent weeks as the two continue to battle for supremacy in the 2016 GOP primary. The problem for some, however, is that Cruz's criticism of Trump's record on guns, abortion and gay marriage comes after months of high praise and laudatory remarks.
CNN's John Berman noted Tuesday morning in an interview with campaign spokesman Rick Tyler that Trump's record on the Second Amendment and gay marriage isn't exactly new.
"On Donald Trump's record, which you are now calling out, this is all his record before he jumped into the race," the host noted.
And in that time, Berman added, Cruz has said of the casino tycoon: "I like Donald Trump," "I think he's terrific," "I think he speaks the truth" and "[I'm] grateful he's in the race."
Cruz has also promised on several occasions that he will continue to sing Trump's praises, and has vowed to criticize him only on the issues.
"What happened? Ted Cruz seemed to love Donald Trump?" Berman asked. "When you call Donald Trump inconsistent, all I'm trying to understand is how is it consistent that Ted Cruz seemed to like Donald Trump and be okay with [his known record] in August, September, October and November? But now not so?"

“...why he canât keep track of things he said in the past because he doesnât actually know what he believes.”
With all the You-Tube videos out there with Cruz contradicting himself, that must be his problem.
I’m not saying that Cruz wouldn’t garner support. Without Trump in the race, Cruz would have been muffled by the media and GOPe and to think that it wouldn’t have happened is foolish. Trumps push of bringing to the front major issues combined with his push back on the media and GOPe took the focus off of Cruz and allowed him to further his campaign.
2DV: Is Nick big on your lists?
Not directly confronting is one thing, holding hands with socialists is another. He permanently tarnished his reputation by lying down with dogs.
So what do you think is the end game to his supposed clever ploy? Trump will allow him to stay Senator for two more years?
Trump will NEVER endorse Cruz, put him on the ticket, or give him any position.
You think in two years, Cruz will get a job at Trump's organization? Keep dreaming.
in that, Sir, you are right.
See this from Trump all the time.
I have never claimed to be a Cruz supporter. I am not going to give my money to someone who would cozy up to a socialist! Are you happy he would sell out this country so easily?
Look, Cruz has some good points, and he has somethings I can criticize him for. I will say this, he is a conservative, and he'd be light years ahead of Trump. But he has a ways to go before he convinces me. But his signing up for the Trump/Hillary agenda doesn't instill faith in me.
“Itâs brilliant. Donald can never beat Cruz on intellect”
How many billions of dollars has Cruz made? Do dumb people normally turn themselves into billionaires?
Cruz does have a skill of running his mouth, but he gets that by training.
Your recommendation would be go at the maw of The Donald in September?
“The natural home of Trump supporters is with our campaign” - Ted Cruz.
Choosing not to antagonize their then-hero was strategy. Everyone thought Donald would crash. He may have. He may still. Whatever you say about Cruz’s strategies, to have ended up #2 so far with a decent shot is exceptionally good for a Junior Senator. Give the man some credit.
Whose your perfect anointed candidate? Do you have a better recommendation for practical conservatism at this point? Or are you just going to complain about the state of play?
He isn’t worth 10 billion.
So what have you done other than consume pixels on a website?
The funny thing is Trump supporters constantly say I am a Cruz supporter.
I will say this: Trump is by far the worst of all 17 candidates.
Taking hundreds of millions and turning them into billions is child’s play. An S&P 500 index fund could do that.
You keep posing false alternatives. Not going after him is one thing. Becoming metrosecxual BFFs is another.
Have you got an actual candidate to back, or are you a general purpose grump about the lack of a Second Coming?
In 2008 a junior senator with four years, beat an 8 year co-president, and 8 year senator.
Pick a candidate or go home.
Your name spelled backwards is “cruz supporter”.
