US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.

He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.

Green says as a result, those attorneys and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court and asking judges to use the US Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

Our reliable source with the US Marshal in Houston say Aker isn't the first and won't be the last.

They have to serve anywhere from 1200 to 1500 warrants to people who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

Does Bernie know this?

We can bail out banks and big businesses but students are screwed. Makes me sick.

Why such an astronomical amount, to get some kind of permanent court order?

Because apparently the debt collection rules are so much in favor of the collectors. They are allowed to work directly through the IRS, so you’re basically looking at going up against the Federal government in Federal court.

When I started drawing my Social Security 6 years ago, after my second check, I got a notice that I had defaulted on a Student loan from 1974, where I had taken out a correspondence course for Electronics. I cancelled the course after 2 lessons, as it was lousy, and informed the Gum't of it. I thought that was enough.

Next month of my SS, I got NO PAYMENT and they started taking 15% every month until they got their alleged loan back. I tried to fight it for two years, but finally gave up and stated getting my regular monies.

I'm sure glad I didn't get arrested!

“People like you”? I am a “people”?

I don’t need to question Obama and what he does. It is and has always been very obvious. Anything to harm America.

I think the exact opposite, as those jobs are very few and very useless. . .unless in academia.

I didn’t understand your earlier comment to me.

And if you believe our government should just forgive student loans, you’re not a conservative.

True. But honestly how many go for such a major, and what percentage of defaults would such a major account for. Low in both regards, I suspect.

Well, I don’t think banks and other businesses and other countries should be bailed out on the backs of American workers but my opinion doesn’t seem to hold much water.

Oh, I get your point now.

Sadly, more and more are going for those useless and unemployable degrees these days.

I agree that banks and other institutions shouldn’t be bailed out. Never sis I say that I approved of those bailouts. I also don’t believe we should bail out students that took out loans.

Not to mention that actual crooks caused actual crimes while the SEVEN (what a ridiculous overuse of manpower!) Marshalls were sent after one unarmed dumb kid that they could have picked up with a mall cop. Someone needs a forced early retirement for wasting taxpayer dollars and LEO ‘boot time’.
