HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.
Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.
He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.
Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.
Green says as a result, those attorneys and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court and asking judges to use the US Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.
Our reliable source with the US Marshal in Houston say Aker isn't the first and won't be the last.
They have to serve anywhere from 1200 to 1500 warrants to people who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

If they've been in denial this long I wouldn't count on this prying very many of them out of it.
I though that under obama he changed it that if you hadn’t paid it in 20 years you were free and clear of repaying it. I thought he changed it from 25 years down to 20 so what gives?
Sorry that crap isn’t going to play. This isn’t some fool that charged up $30k in plastic surgery (which is dischargeable debt), most of these folks went into debt for programs which led to no jobs.
Make school loans dischargeable and we’ll see how hard schools push loans.
I like it.
I’m not saying let the deadbeats get away with not paying.....it’s just overkill to send seven U.S. Marshals like the guy is some kind of drug kingpin.
A better way would be to put a lien on his home or condo, or attach a bank account, garner his wages; something on that order.
Interest and fines will ensure it’s way more than $1500 outstanding.
What’s the point of me saving 529’s for my children when I can just get it for “free”?
Political leaders HATE responsible peasants....
Well I think you are partly right here. We don’t have debtor’s prison in the US so you can’t be jailed for debt but if the the court sends you a notice to appear at a judement hearing and you don’t bother to show up they can put out a bench warrant. Probably the best thing to do is show up and go out in the hallway and make a deal with the debtholder. If you can’t make the payments later because you are totally broke then there’s not much they can do.
Which is fine but why send 7 jackboots for a situation that requires one or two Sheriffs deputies when the feds aren't involved? Is there some violent history we are not being made aware of or do the Feds think they are so hated that all debt collection will be met with violence?
It’s about time. In 1987 my dentist bragged he owed over $40,000 and wasn’t going to pay it. He filled my teeth (tooth) said the bill was $300. I said I wasn’t going to pay it, I had to make a student loan payment. I had bill collectors etc. after me until I decided to pay it. Dickered with them and it only cost $235.00.
So I guess they have purged all our government workers who have not paid their taxes then, right?.....ANNNND Al Sharpton?
He hasn’t made enough in almost 30 years to pay off a $1500 loan?
Well, I didn’t say that “college should be free.”
What I DID allude to - and if you had reading skills, you’d have caught this - is that the government uses the promise of free money to sucker college students into a vortex from which they won’t be able to escape, and purposefully does this.
this low-life loser SCUMBALL DEADBEAT couldn't scrape together $1,500 over 29 years to pay off his student loan?!
Really?!
I cannot wait to see them start arresting the "millenials" who've racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt for worthless college degrees that'll never amount to a nickel of a paycheck!!
So what are you saying? It's ok to accept a loan and then, for 30 years make NO effort at all to repay that loan? That's ok with you?
Back in the day, I made a time deposit with Discover bank and when I went to close it out, I just wrote a check for the account balance and cashed it. There was a delay in the check posting such that about thirty cents was left in the account. I ignored it. Yet every month for about six months, I’d get a statement in the mail without postage that was more than my balance. Someone eventually wised up...
Pay up sucker! You’re in your mid 50s, stop relying on the American taxpayer to float your loan for life, deadbeat!
What ever happened to the loan defaulting, the Treasury picking it up and garnishing wages? I know a couple people who let their loans get to that point. One pay day a rather large sum was “missing” from their pay and continued to be missing until they were paid off.
I guess that wouldn’t be sensational enough?
“Which is fine but why send 7 jackboots for a situation”
Maybe they were picking up a bunch of them at once? Two for each van (3 vans) plus a supervisor. Or maybe they were training other Marshals on how to properly do it so violence doesn’t occur when they go after the others.
Do you want the local Sheriff coming after you to do the Fed’s dirty work? (think about possible future Federal laws that might contradict with State law - like Kansas)
Again I will say - you are on the wrong website.
