Russian cluster bombs tear through streets of Aleppo, Syria Brandon Livesay
By Brandon Livesay
Russia has unleashed devastating cluster bombs on the Syrian city of Aleppo, only a day after its missiles killed at least 50 civilians.
Syrian news outlet Shaam Network released footage of a Russian plane as it bombarded the rebel-held neighbourhood of Haritan with cluster munitions.
The buildings were lit up in blinding light as the explosives tore through the city streets.
Any casualties from the air strike, reportedly dropped by an Su-34 plane, are not yet known.

That’s how you win wars - by not being PC.
“Syrian news outlet Shaam Network....”
We’ve got a few of those sham networks too.
Saudi Arabia and Turkey, with the backing of the USA and Obama, started a proxy-war under the guise of the “Arab Spring” to put God-only-knows what sunni group in charge of Syria, and to poke Russia in the eye.
Now the Saudis and Turks are losing that war and they are upset about it.
Don't they have small nukes?
“Collateral Damage” is part of war. It helps end them sooner. See for example: Dresden, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Berlin, Atlanta, Richmond, etc.

“Moderate muslims are the high grass in which the muslim terrorist hide.” (learned on FR from another Freeper)
Those are reserved for meccah and medina.
The Russians know war, its not a meals on wheels operation. No restrictions, just pound them into the ground warfare. Lots of innocent (maybe?) casualties for sure, but why draw it out when it can be done quickly? They obviously don’t have weak kneed leadership in Moscow. If Hillary wins in 2017 maybe she can change things by barking at Putin?
Putin: “I will make Hillary bark like a dog.”
That’s an ugly visual. Sorry.

The Saudis are losing 2 wars - their adventure in Yemen is going very badly as their troops are using the Iraqi army’s drop and run tactic.
Right! You make the enemy hurt worse than you hurt. Until they hurt they keep on doing the bad things.
The Russians have learned since then. This is not Charlie Wilson’s war, either. Here, there is a sizable portion of the population that are actually pro-Assad. In Afghanistan, it was hard to find anyone that was actually glad the Russians were there.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m glad I’m not a Syrian of any persuasion.

Surprise! The Soviets Nearly Won Afghan War
December 26, 2004|Mark Kramer | Mark Kramer is director of the Harvard Cold War studies program and a senior fellow at the university's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian studies.
Twenty-five years ago, on Christmas Eve, Soviet troops marched into Afghanistan with the aim of restoring order in a few months. Nine years later they withdrew amid continued violence. In their wake, civil war erupted and the Taliban rose to power, providing a haven to Al Qaeda.
Critics of the U.S. military effort in Iraq often cite the Soviet experience in Afghanistan as evidence that using foreign troops to put down an insurgency is bound to fail. But that "lesson" is misleading because it depends on a depiction of the Soviet-Afghan war that is downright inaccurate.
When Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan, they initially failed to protect their logistical and communications lines. But Soviet commanders quickly corrected these mistakes and brought in better troops, including helicopter pilots trained for mountain warfare. From mid-1980 on, the Afghan guerrillas never seized any major Soviet facilities or prevented major troop deployments and movements.
When Soviet generals shifted, in mid-1983, to a counterinsurgency strategy of scorched-earth tactics and the use of heavily armed special operations forces, their progress against the guerrillas accelerated. Over the next few years, the Soviets increased their control of Afghanistan, inflicting many casualties -- guerrilla and civilian. Had it not been for the immense support -- weapons, training, materials -- provided to the Afghan guerrillas by the United States, Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan, Soviet troops would have achieved outright victory.
Even with all the outside military assistance, Afghan guerrillas were often helpless when facing the Soviet military machine. Raids conducted by Soviet airborne and helicopter forces were especially effective.
Vastly different terrain and logistics.
Plus I think the USA has learned not to give advanced missile systems to organized Muslim terrorist groups
you do have a point re: Russia not being wanted in afghanistan.
But it sure looks like a replay of the beginning in afghanistan. Bomb the hell out of everybody in the city then kill those who try to escape - no discretion re: good buy or bad guy.
I actually think that is one way to do it.
I would prefer a Sherman march through the country, but there would never be any will for that.
Can Putin continue and ignore the lefty voices that are getting louder ?
I still don’t understand all those male Syrians leaving for parts unknown.
as you say, it will get interesting-er
Surprise! The U.S. Nearly Won Vietnam War
feel better ?
not wrong.
approx.one million civilians were killed.
9,000 Mujahideen fighters
18,000 Afghan troops
14,500 Soviet troops.
and yet by 1982, the Mujahideen controlled approx. 75% of the country and that stayed mostly the same til the end of the war.
History shows anybody who goes into Afghanistan is going to have their hat handed to them and end up leaving.
I’ve not read one article about Saudi success in Yemen and have seen plenty of Jihadi videos of Saudi armour and transports being annihilated.
