uthorities said that a deputy responded to a disturbance call at 11:46 a.m. Wednesday at the Panera Bread near Emmorton Road in Abingdon. That deputy was wounded when at least one shot was fired in his direction, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said.
Gahler said restaurant witnesses gave good information as to which way the shooter went. A second responding deputy found the suspect and shots were fired again, injuring the second deputy.
"We believe the deputies were shot by the same suspect," Gahler said.
Two additional deputies, who responded to the initial shooting, fired rounds and a short time later, the suspect was killed, Gahler said. The suspect was identified as 67-year-old David Evans, Gahler said.
"We know that there were two warrants for his arrest," Gahler said. "We believe we were sent (to Panera Bread) because someone knew who he was."
Police said Evans had two open warrants in two states. Evans had a criminal warrant in Florida for assaulting a police officer and fleeing and eluding (police). In Harford County, Evans had an open civil warrant.
A loaded handgun was found with Evans after the shootout, Gahler said.
"We are not looking for anyone else," Gahler said. "There is no longer a threat to the community."
The second two deputies involved in the shooting with the suspect were placed on administrative leave per agency protocol pending a completed investigation, Gahler said.
ABINGDON, Md. --Two Harford County Sheriff's deputies have succumbed to their injuries after shootings at an Abingdon shopping center, officials said.
Memory Eternal for these fallen Soldiers of the Law!
Shameful.
RIP
Rest in Peace, Deputies.
I grew up a couple of miles up Emmorton Road from that shopping center. Last time I was there, it seemed like a reasonably nice, quiet area.
The world is going insane.
Sad news. R.I.P. officers. And good that their murderer is dead.
Did the dispatcher fail to stress the danger to the officer(s) ?
It seems to be still. My wife and son drove by there jut a few minutes before all this went down.
Ping
Rest in Peace, officers...
This strikes home... I live there, and I shop at the grocery store there in the same shopping center.
Unfortunately, It can happen anywhere these days. Losers roam freely.
Just an awful tragedy. I’m in MD as well. Without discussing even the criminal element, this was such a bold and disgusting act of disrespect for an officer representing the law. He had absolutely no regard for a civil society, noting that he had assaulted an officer in Florida. Glad we don’t have to deal with someone like him any longer. But, God comfort the family and friends of our Fallen.
Heard about this today. Abingdon is close to where I work.
This is a real shame. Prayers up for the families.
