Perhaps they heard some sounds that none of them felt like investigating.

You will never have drilling success if you don’t pay proper respect to the Artesians who own the under-earth.

I seem to recall a US Navy deep hole project in Indonesia in the mid 60’s.
It is bugging me now that I can’t remember the details

The center of the earth is 3,693 MILES away and these nuts were going to drill 4,265 FEET.
Hardly the center of the earth.

So they managed to drill a hole a little less than 2600 feet in water that was a bit shallower than that (appx. 700 meters). Offshore wells go a lot deeper than that in water a lot deeper. Maybe they rented their drilling rig from the wrong outfit.

Good thing they didn't make it. . . even in the 1960s, they knew this was not a good idea. . .

I’m not sure they should even be trying this.

I remember reading a “New Tom Swift” book, back in the late sixties, about them drilling to the center of the earth to uncover a vast storage of new minerals.

Expedition to drill to center of Earth ends without successI highly doubt they were even TRYING to drill to the CENTER!

...had set out to drill down to 4,265 feet in a stretch of ocean floor ...Boys; it's approximately 3950 miles to the center; so we've only 3949 miles and some feet to go.

Expedition to drill to center of Earth ends without successMaybe this is just a cover story for the real mission. In 1974, a ship called the Glomar Explorer, believed to be owned by billionaire Howard Hughes, began a mission to supposedly extract minerals from the ocean floor. In reality, it was a CIA operation that was attempting to retrieve a sunken Soviet nuclear submarine that was sitting on the ocean floor.
