President Barack Obamaâs private meetings with congressional Republican leaders appeared to do very little to break the legislative impasse that largely has defined his tenure.
Descriptions of the meeting from both ends of Pennsylvania Ave. were clinical at best. Notably missing were usual Washington declarations that a high-level meeting was âproductiveâ or âconstructive.â Asked about that omission, an aide to Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., called the speakerâs time on Tuesday with Obama âcordial.â
And, in a fitting bit of symbolism, Ryan departed the White House for yet another House vote on a measure to repeal Obamaâs signature health care law. That bill is expected to die on its way to the Senate, though the presidentâs veto pen would prevent it from becoming law.
Shortly after the two Republican leaders left the White House, Press Secretary Josh Earnest advised reporters against expecting any policy announcements â large or small â stemming from the meeting. Instead, he said Obamaâs goal for the meeting was to âlay the groundworkâ for future cooperation during his last 11 months in office.

Commen?
They both suck and soon will be political history.
They are lying, just a guess.
Those idiots have already given him a check for everything he wanted for the rest of his time usurping the Presidency.
Paul “Tea Party” Ryan, is one of our more “Conservative” Republicans, right?
Sticking the knife in the collective back of conservatives takes a lot of preparation, to be sure. 0bama has lots of stuff he'd like to see happen in his last eleven months and Ryan wants to make sure he has a complete list so he can give him all of it.
Commen? New word?
Why does our side, we have a majority in both houses, govern like losers?
We won, we should be forcing the whitehouse to our agenda
Not bending over and giving Obama everything he wants
WTF!
Republicans need to cool it with the continuous circular firing squads.
They knew exactly what they were doing. Traitors that need to go.
What did everyone expect out of Ryan? We all knew he was the darling of the GOPe since he was totally a “go along to get along” guy and a darling of the GOPe.
Be sure to reelect these “good ole boys” in the GOPe next election cycles so we can “go down the shitter with old Tex Ritter.”
