US general says carpet bombing against 'our values'

Army Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, the US commander in charge of the coalition fighting Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria, said Monday that carpet bombing the terrorists would be "inconsistent with our values."

The remark is seen as being aimed at Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).

In December, Cruz pledged to "utterly destroy ISIS," and vowed: "We will carpet-bomb them into oblivion." He even hinted at the use of nuclear weapons, saying: "I don't know if sand can glow in the dark, but we're going to find out."

After being asked to explain why carpet bombing would not be an effective strategy against ISIS, MacFarland told reporters the US was "bound by the laws of armed conflict."

"We're the United States of America. We have a set of guiding principles," he said. "Indiscriminate bombing, where we don't care if we're killing innocents or combatants, is just inconsistent with our values."

MacFarland said that carpet bombing is precisely what Russia is accused of doing in its own air campaign in Syria, in support of Bashar al-Assad.

He added: "Right now we have the moral high ground, and I think that's where we need to stay."

MacFarland claimed the anti-ISIS campaign is making progress in both Iraq and Syria, and that the jihadists had lost about 40% of the territory they had held.

If you’re referring to the so-called “Highway of Death” in Iraq/Kuwait, there was quite the visceral reaction to that in the “court of public opinion”.

As I recall, many were of the opinion that since they were retreating, they weren’t “combatants”. Had no understanding of how to conduct a war.

But our military at the time did. Would have chased them all the way to Baghdad if allowed.

My, how times have changed.

You’re Fired!

If George Patton were here today and heard that nonsense from that twit, he would slap him until his hand hurt.

Not to contradict but augment what you said,

Don’t you win a war by creating conditions on the ground where the population will not tolerate those fighters in their midst who cause them to be harmed by forces on the other side?

However, I am not convinced that any muslim would give a crap about their family being bombed into oblivion. So I question the effectiveness of carpet bombing them. I am more of the “kill them all” school.

I say that because, who would strap a bomb on a child and sent them into a crowd to be detonated remotely? Who does many of the things that we see in the muslim world, done by muslims, against other muslims.

“Then just call it Linoleum Bombing.”

Yes. “Carpet” bombing might be considered insensitive to lesbians.

In popping off to respond to a political candidate seeking to displace the party of the administration in office, Gen. MacFarland places himself among the Pentagon’s toadies in uniform. He also seems to forget that the US Army Air Force engaged in carpet bombing of enemy cities during WW II, deliberately killing hundreds of thousands of civilians in the process. And today, in extreme circumstances, the US President as Commander in Chief would be obliged to order the use of nuclear weapons to obliterate one or more enemy nations. Assuming a valid military necessity, carpet bombing ISIS would be fully justified and even praiseworthy as a rapid way to dispose of an especially savage adversary.

Show this guy the door.
And find a reincarnation of LeMay to lead the USAF.

This is the same General who claims the US led coalition has killed 20,000 ISIS fighters.

General IDIOT thus spits on the guys who rode the B-17s, B29s, B24s and thousands of smaller planes during the early 1940’s. It made all the papers at the time as we destroyed those warring against us.
Of course, when it was over, it was the United States FIRST in line to assist and finance their re-building.
The “General” doesn’t understand that you learn more about a people when they are victorious that when they are at war.
Those against us NOW, are infinetly WORSE in victory than we are when actually waging war.

Good thing that this "P***Y" wasn't around in WWII. Any number of Officers or Non-Coms would have taken pleasure in his "Unfortunate Accident"! Patton probably would have just SHOT HIM HIMSELF!!!

I don't believe we should Carpet Bomb (i.e., indiscriminate). Rather, we know the targets, we should go after all of them, not just “pin pricks” that cause little real damage. Either we are in the air-war or we are not.
