Jeff Kaufmann: When I talk about intensity, Im talking about, were now getting about 100 phone calls and hour into RPI (Republican Party of Iowa)⦠To put that into perspective, we get usually 5 or 6 an hour normally. This is beyond the pale⦠A lot of Democrats and Independents are asking about changing their vote to Republican. The Secretary of Stateâs report last week indicated over 3,000 people have done that already. I think weâre going to see a little bit of a surge that way.
Kuafmann credited the Trump and Rand Paul campaigns for this surge in new GOP voters.

I just can’t believe democrats are willing to vote for Cruz.
The good news is that this is paltry:
The Secretary of State’s report last week indicated over 3,000 people have done that already.
“To put that into perspective, we get usually 5 or 6 an hour normally.”
Well, duh... of course there’s a surge immediately before a caucus or election.
Farm bureau guy.
You mean like voting faithfully for decades for the Grand Old Party’s ideology Uncle Miltie? pffft
Indeed. Hillary’s ‘Operation Chaos’ is in full swing!
Really?
When we have Ted Cruz’s pretty well established actual conservatism versus Trump’s random brain farts, you’re going to suggest we don’t have an actual choice for something better?
Maybe not.
Iowans are more rural and Conservative than the rest of the US electorate. The Democrats have Hillary and Bernie to choose from, which isn’t much offa choice. It’s easy to envision Conservative and centrist Democrats with populist leanings deciding to cross over for Trump. It’s also easy to envision Democrat evangelicals (yes they do exist) deciding to cross over and vote for Cruz.
Exactly.
That is just not rational.
How about this: R candidates, and we don't know who they are, have offered conservative/traditional D's a good alternative, and so they're changing.
I know a LOT of registered D's who are not an ideological fit for that party, who have been hurt by the economy, who rage against the higher insurance policies Obama delivered.
Do we not WANT these people to join our party rather than reflexively pulling the D lever because the granddaddy was a precinct captain way back in the day?
This happened in France not long ago when a lot of lefties voted for Le Pen’s opponent causing her to lose. This is their new nasty trick to get the most unelectable as the nominee.
In this case it’s Trump. I like Trump and think he’s a hero for bringing up immigration and the muzzie problem on a national scale, however, Cruz is the most trustworthy and Rubio is for amnesty so that makes him unelectable in my book.
It’s not as if there’s not a highly competitive Dem caucus vote, as well. With Hillary and Bernie within very few points of each other, why would a Democrat switch to R? Their D vote is important tonight.
On the other hand, if they were merely registered as D but not really party people, they would be amenable to switching and voting for an R in the caucus.
I thought at the caucuses voters just go to whichever party’s caucus they choose that night? If they have to go thru a Secy of State/Board of Elections to switch parties in advance of the caucus, I would think this week - especially today - is a tad late? Boards of Elections just don’t move that quickly.
That worked wonderfully. Eight years of Obama.
Can’t decide if its for Trump or Paul or against Trump. And sure maybe Rubio to hand Trump and Cruz the loss.
I changed back to Republican, so I can vote in the primaries in AZ and vote for Ted Cruz. Otherwise, as an Independent, I wouldn’t have a say in the primaries and that sucks. Don’t know about changing back to Ind yet....
Nice to see this. Considering that Hillary and Sanders are neck and neck, it is OBVIOUSLY NOT political hacks doing this to try to sabotage the Republican Primary, as those people have a Democrat dogfight on their hands and every last one of them will vote in the Democrat caucuses.
Rather it is the type of people that Trump will be pulling over to vote for him...today’s version of the Reagan Democrats.
can you explain? I’ve heard several times how bad weather will be bad for Trump, good for Cruz, but I can’t figure out how.
of COURSE.. TRUMP IS DEMOCRAT.. they can vote for him with a clear conscience!
ve there may be some doing so to gum up the works of the Rep. caucus, I think many more are swapping party designation to vote for Trump. You canât ignore the turn-out for his rallies. It canât be all Republicans
That is just plain silly. Neither Hillary or Sanders would give up any votes for something like that... it is too close. Sometimes being paranoid leads you to crazy conclusions.
Of course he does - the only people that support him are the people. The lefties hate him, the govt. employees hate him, Fox news hates him and the entire Conservative Cash family hates him. The lefty networks are embracing Trumpians for ratings because of all the people that can’t even stand to watch Fox anymore. Trump can fix those false negatives. The Fox and Cash groups will stop soon enough.
