Ted Cruz under siege in Iowa
cnn ^ | 4:12 PM ET, Fri January 29, 2016 | Theodore Schleifer and Nia-Malika Henderson

Ted Cruz started the month riding high in Iowa. Now, he just wants to get out of the state alive.

The self-styled rock-ribbed conservative is under siege, battling attacks from his right and left flanks who say the Texas senator with tea party and evangelical credentials isn't who he claims to be.

And as Cruz appears to be falling farther behind front-runner Donald Trump, his campaign is now looking in the rear-view mirror, concerned that Marco Rubio and the rest of the GOP field are closing in.

Cruz's problems were in sharp relief at the Fox News debate in Des Moines Thursday night, where he was everyone's favorite punching bag. The consistent charge: Cruz is a fake.

"This is the lie that Ted's campaign is built on, and Rand touched upon it -- that he's the most conservative guy, and everyone else is a -- you know, everyone else is a RINO," Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday night. "The truth is, Ted, throughout this campaign, you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes."

A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows that Trump has overtaken Cruz by 7 points, leading 32% to 25%.

Most tellingly, both his campaign and one of his super PACs on Thursday launched new television advertisements against Rubio, a candidate they already saw on defeated.

...

Meanwhile, Trump is free to skip debates and constantly question Cruz's eligibility to serve as president.

"I'm glad I wasn't there 'cause I guess all of that -- he got pummeled, wow," Trump said Friday of the Fox News debate. "And you know they didn't even mention he was born in Canada."

Same.

Some of my ribbing comes with a hint of truthfulness to it though. The mocking of Trump at the beginning of the debate last night, the whining about too many mean questions... there are things I find very off-putting about Cruz, because he struggles mightily to not come off as a total phony, and most times he loses the struggle.

It reminds me (and I’m not saying he’s anything like her policy-wise) of when Clinton tries to tell jokes about the internet to room full of 20-something neckbeards.

Trump sure can put his foot in his mouth with his twitter slamming and mockery on the campaign trail, but at least when he does it, he’s quite obviously being himself, and not just telling a joke that was vetted by a Luntz focus group.

I’m just really sick of the phony lawyery career politician types this cycle.

I also read where Cruz hit each of those who quit with legal documents (probably just a copy of the contract they signed when they took the job) requiring they keep silent and not talk to the media. These are probably young people who aren’t going to risk getting sued.

I’m missing where Cruz slipped up. I’m seeing the MSM and the GOPe in full Goebbels mode here.

I don’t know about all this talk about seven resignations. I just can’t help but wonder if the GOPe planted some of these people and told them to leave now just when it would hurt Cruz the most. I know what the creeps did to Palin and with the way they treated McDaniel in Mississippi, I would not put anything past them.

Hello? Too many people think they can read minds. My best guess is that the Rubio focus is about defense, not offense. Rubio has attacked Cruz relentlessly. I cannot see that there is any concern other than to counter the non stop slimy Rubio attacks. Rubio relentlessly attacks Cruz as flip-flopping on amnesty. In my opinion, that is probably an attempt to distract from his own flip-flopping.

Reporters seem to have lost the art of reporting facts and instead think they can report motives.

Cruz should’ve been smart and avoided the ambush by the Nazi propagandists at FOX. If he had, he’d be riding high and be assured of finishing No. 2, if not competing for the No. 1 spot.

‘Why Was Ted Cruz Born In Canada?’

LOL, I imagine this was googled by Cruz supporters who didn’t know, like “Why, God? WHY DID HE HAVE TO BE CANADIAN!?!”

Well it doesn’t take to much effort to find out.

You are correct that it sounds like a possible dirty RNC/DNC play in the usual game.

Given that...who do you think is a potential straight shooter?

The Trumphalism will be short lived when he loses the general election. Some will vote for him anyway. I won’t. I have learned a lot about him over the past few months. I do not trust him as commander in chief. No possible way will I have anything to do with putting an unstable personality in that powerful position. He is also the mother of all flip-floppers. There is no one and nothing he has not flip-flopped on. He makes Al Gore look like a steady guy. I have a cd put out by the RNC called Al Gore’s greatest flip-flops (something like that). Well, he had nothing on Trump.

"And you know they didn't even mention he was born in Canada."

That fruit isn't ripe for picking yet.

So you want Hillary? Those are your choices if Trump gets the nomination. I will vote for whoever wins the nomination whether I like them, hate them, or other. It might at least put off the end.

I expect that you are correct, typical of any campaign practice. The non-sourced info may come from those family members or friends are not subject to non-disclosure and who may have been told they were leaving even before the kids exited.

Makes you wonder where, “Dude, wait...” placed in the top terms list.
