Tonight's Republican debate opened with Megyn Kelly asking about Donald Trump's absence. After thanking Iowans for their hospitality, Sen. Cruz proceeded to call his competitors "stupid, fat, and ugly." Then, turning to Dr. Carson, Cruz said, "And Ben, you're a terrible surgeon."

It isn’t his strong suit. It’s good you find it meaningful.

I think it was Barry Diller who said one time, "the best thing that can happen to you in business is to utterly fail.   Not a small failure, but a big failure that brings you to your knees.   Only then do you learn how to run your business creatively."

That happened to me.   I went bankrupt one time and I thank God my wife stayed with me.   But you do gain instincts you never had until you fail.

And as you suggested, politicians like Obama and Cruz and Rubio are lacking an important ingredient -- they never really built anything on their own.   And never had the opportunity to fail on their own.   So they lack a certain measure of wisdom.

Now many businessmen later become politicians which is a good path.   But just having a law degree and working in politics -- or for a large law firm -- gives you a distorted view of the forces that make our nation work.

I really feel Trump is grounded, solid, and careful.   So it's an exciting prospect to think a guy so well-prepared could actually lead the country.

But everyone in attendance (50+) at the local GOP debate watch knew exactly what Ted Cruz meant.
