CHARLOTTE, N.C. â Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suggested for the first time Wednesday that race may play a factor in why he's become a lightning rod for public criticism.
"I'm an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven't seen nothing that they can compare me to," said the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton.
The No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL draft out of Auburn, Newton has his share of detractors who either don't like how he plays, his celebrations or his abundance of self-confidence.

This guy screwed UF over bigtime, he was going to be suspended for academic reasons, so he bolted. And UF hasn’t recovered.
Manning and the Broncos are going to win the Super Bowl. This is probably Mannings swan song and he will be way up.
Oscars, BET, NFL.
From Warren Moon’s page at Wiki:
“In March 2011, Moon stepped back in the limelight while working as a “mentor” to Cam Newton, who became the Overall #1 2011 NFL Draft Pick to the Carolina Panthers. Moon publicly stated that Newton was being unfairly criticized for character flaws, lack of experience, and low football IQ and that the only reason that Newton was being targeted by football analysts and sports-writers was because he is African-American.”
Hey look at me I’m a victim! More BS from the hyphenated group that wallows in victim-hood. I for one don’t pay much attention to high paid victims.
Exactly, a multi-millionaire victim.
You’re right; wishful thinking on Cam’s part. Doug Williams did a great job, and proved that a black quarterback could win the Super Bowl (with little fanfare).
Heisman Trophy, NFL MVP, top-of-the-line contract, oodles of endorsement money. Gee, imagine how successful this guy would be if this wasn’t such a racist country.
