Three years after David Daleiden launched his plot against Planned Parenthood, and six months after the release of his undercover videos triggered a national political tempest, the first criminal indictments were finally handed down Monday in connection with the sting.
...But in a surprise twist, it's Daleiden, not Planned Parenthood, on the business end of criminal charges.
(snip)
...At this point, Daleiden was nearing the end of a 30-month caper, which saw him train a team of undercover activists to help him infiltrate Planned Parenthood...
Daleiden and an associate breezed past the building's metal detector, and allegedly presented as identification a phony California drivers license with the name of an alias, Robert Sarkis. In normal cases, the use of a fake ID would not warrant felony charges; a grand jury would not, for example, throw the book at an underage kid using a phony government ID to pick up a six-pack of beer. But Texas state law includes a provision that elevates this transgression--knowingly using a fake government document--to a second-degree felony if "the intent is to defraud or harm another." The grand jury decided that Daleiden's goal was to do just that, by using his cover story to make a covert recording designed to damage Planned Parenthood's reputation.

Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson began that investigation last August, according to a spokesman, collaborating with law enforcement on a probe with subpoena power that stretched well into the fall. In December, the case was referred to the grand jury--but by that time, the Planned Parenthood affiliate was no longer the target. The grand jury never even took a vote on whether to charge Planned Parenthood with a crime. Instead, it concluded that Daleiden and his associate, identified as Sandra Merritt, 62, should be indicted.

And this is what passes as "impartial journalism" these days.
Again, a PLANNED PARENTHOOD ATTORNEY is treated like an impartial expert in the story.
I hope a lot is said about this tomorrow night.
"But Texas state law includes a provision that elevates this transgression--knowingly using a fake government document--to a second-degree felony if "the intent is to defraud or harm another."
TOTALLY POLITICAL!
I'm thankful for the work done by the Center for Medical Progress. They did an excellent investigation. We got a view inside PP which they can truly deny since it's not just reports but caught on tape. No wonder Satan is so angry.
And planned parenthood was defrauded exactly how?
I could have sworn they had videotape.
Of course ABC did not follow up with any commentary as to the veracity of the PP spokesperson's assertion.
But then again their reputation was not really worsened because there was a conspiracy by the MSM to stifle the videos.
So I see two arguments that can be made by the defense already.
Proof once again that a politically motivated prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict anyone for anything. Just ask Tom Delay and Rick Perry.
So they got indicted for using fake drivers’ licenses? How about indicting a few million illegal aliens for the same thing?
They should open the files and find every single fracking time an undercover “News Investigation” took place and charge the news people involved with the same charges....
The fact the media isn’t screaming about this means the media is mostly bought an paid for....
I would love to be on the jury. Not guilty!
And it all seems to come out of Austin, TX, even when the alleged crime occured in Houston. That’s like a DA in Sacramento, CA prosecuting someone for a crime committed in Las Angeles County, which doesn’t happen. WTF going on in TX?
Take it to a jury, I dare you. Because to try you they have to show the video. All you need is ONE juror to vote not guilty.
“...a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorneyâs office serves on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood.”
Houston is in Harris County, Austin is in Travis County.
Texas’ Attorney General, Dan Paxon, will have the last word and PP isn’t going to like it.
> intent to defraud or harm another
Does any one believe that Daleiden intended to deprive or cheat Planned Parenthood of money or property?
Boom!
“mastermind” “caper” “plot”
Nope. No bias there.
I’ve read that and that conflict of interest needs to be investigated.
My thought exactly.
And the gleeful Schadenfreude in the first couple of paragraphs isn’t there either.
The Planned Parenthood attorney also sounds like the author’s good buddy.
With all this BS about PP and those videos. How about if someone were to post the real videos for all of us to see and make come to a decision?
Yes. If Daidlein's (sp) attorney is smart, he'll refuse any "deals" to "keep him out of jail in exchange for a lesser charge" offered by the leftist DA.
"No sir, I plead not guilty. I want my day in court. And I want full discovery. In fact I want it televised, with ALL unedited videos as part of my defense."
I say bring it.
Let leftists stew in their own juices.
Since the case is so high profile, calling their bluff should blow up in PP's faces.
Even if Fox is the only one to broadcast it, let it be so.
Most if not all of the full-length videos are online at the Center for Medical Progress web site. I’ve watched quite a few.
But PP uses cultic brainwashing about what’s in them. Secular humanist narratives have to be used because a common sense interpretation of the videos yields unsatisfactory results. Common sense serves “the war on women.”
