Sparks fly in debate over North Fork coal mining ( Jobs & Energy: Colorado )
Grand Junction Media ^ | January 24, 2016 | Gary Harmon

Posted on 01/25/2016 8:57:07 AM PST by george76

Environmental organizations that offered more than 150,000 comments calling on the U.S. Forest Service to reject an agreement to allow additional mining in the North Fork area said the response demonstrated strong public opposition.

More like "stuffing the ballot box," said an industry spokesman who noted that the environmental opposition would undermine a bargain fashioned over five years of talks.

The Forest Service proposes reinstating the North Fork coal-mining exception to the Colorado Roadless Rule. The exception would allow Arch Coal to extend the West Elk Mine near Somerset below the roadless area.

The roadless exemption would allow construction of surface wells to vent methane from underground mining to help prevent explosions.

The mine employs more than 300 people.

The issue, however, touched a nerve in several environmental organizations, according to Earthjustice, 50,000 of whose supporters commented on the proposal. Others included 50,000 from the Sierra Club, 33,000 from Friends of the Earth, 12,000 from the Climate Reality Project, 6,000 from WildEarth Guardians and 1,000 from the Center for Biological Diversity.

...

Colorado Mining Association President Stuart Sanderson was unimpressed, noting that comments frequently appear in the form of form letters.

"Typical attempt by anti-coal groups to stuff the ballot box," Sanderson said.

...

WildEarth Guardians has "been less than accurate about its support in the past, as the 'Beergate' scandal attests," Sanderson said, referring to the reaction of some businesses listed as supporters by the company when WildEarth Guardians forced additional environmental reviews of Colowyo mine.

Here are just two links for the enviro organizations listed in the article. Scroll through the staff bio’s and what you will find are a bunch of law degrees mining their income from gullible citizens.

I work for a railroad that USED to to haul coal out of that region.

Our railroad just abandoned that area due to loss of coal traffic.

Don’t ignore the trickle down effect. The loss of a primary producer job causes far more job losses down the line.

Dept. of interior issues a permit 10 years ago, which causes investors to risk millions of dollars to build mines which positively affect the lives of millions of people by creating jobs and fuel for a power plant. Fast forward 10 years and some lawyers looking for large fees / eco terrorists find an Obama appointed judge to rescind the permit

It’s corruption plain and simple.

This is how it works.

-Federal government restricts permitting to US business, citizens.

-Federal agency seizes land and interests under environmental, land management, etc. Basically under any pretext they can find.

-Federal government acquires the property and leases it to a foreign company.

-Foreign company provides kickbacks and bribes back to politicians.

-Foreign company passes higher costs onto US consumers including costs of ongoing political kickbacks and bribes.

Speaking of railroads. I took this video on Saturday.

There are over 150 locomotives mothballed on a siding near my town due to the Obama economy and the enviro’s

Interesting. I assume the current cheap diesel fuel benefits the trucking industry vs rail some also.

The ARCO coal mine east of Paonia is the cleanest mine I have
ever seen, and it feeds two coal trains daily.

Don't forget the 350 miners at Twentymile producing almost a third of the coal mined in Colorado, or the 90 operators at Hayden Station generating just shy of 500 MW for the grid. Then there's Sage Creek Mine, developed and sitting idle for about 4 years.

It's much better to buy gas from out-of-state producers than pay wages in Colorado. Nobody is going to miss the Community Development grants funded by NW Colorado mineral severance taxes either.

Sierra Club and Earthjustice are well funded ecoterrorists who brought huge killing machine wolves to the west and Midwest.

I detest them more than I can find words to express it.

So, who owns the leases for the coal and who owns the land?

A lot of the decisions that the Obama administration is making depends on whether the mining company is a crony partner of the Obama administration.

Right now, th value of sub-bituminous coal is less than the cost of a load of top soil. The reason that the Obama administration is shutting down new leases is to try to jack up the value of the coal that is being mined from existing locations, being worked by the crony partners, Peabody and Arch.

The old rule, that the Obama administration passed was to limit the sale of new leases to only mining companies who were operating contiguous mines. So, if Peabody owned the lease on either side of the new lease, only Peabody could bid.

How many live within 500 miles of the project?

How many wrote more than once under different letterheads?

I think some people are figuring that out as the oil patch implodes.

That looks like all of their SD70’s, -8’s, -9’s and all of the other older locomotives.

The rail yard that I work at, we put a whole bunch of older locomotives like those into long term storage. Most of those have been replaced by brand new locomotives being delivered now.

Nonetheless, in 2014, most of those units were probably still in service.
