I believe he did sign a pledge to support the nominee of the Party. Trump was the only initial holdout and he finally came around.

"Cruz should be required to sign a pledge." Cruz signed the pledge to support the GOP nominee, all candidates were required to do so. So no Cruz is not going to run as an independent.
