"Socrates, my master, is my friend but a greater friend is truth." - Plato

Free Market Economist Thomas Sowell recently joined other National Review contributors in criticizing Donald Trump and his candidacy for President of the United States. Stefan Molyneux responds to the writing of one of his intellectual heroes - and illustrates the flawed reasoning contained within Dr. Sowell's "Do Emotions Trump Facts?" article.

Sowell is a respected intellectual conservative.

Even though Trump is “really really really really smart” and “really really really really rich”(through unethcial means),

I’ll stick with Sowell. He has no axe to grind. He speaks from pure principle.

Yes, Trump Voters, there are PRINCPLES. Maybe you have heard of them. Doubt it though. Reality TV and all.

A CONSERVATIVE trump supporter is like a 19 year old that sneaks into a nudie bar and falls in love with a pole dancer and wants to marry her. He’s not seeing the baggage and it will not go well after the honeymoon.

I don’t believe you understand Trump very well. I don’t believe you understand how he is results driven.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. I just don't have any faith that his goals are congruent with my own. I think he has far more in common with Hillary Clinton's values and objectives than he does with mine.

I see him as a stealth GOPe or Democrat lite, absolutely not a Conservative. I wouldn't want him under any circumstance I can imagine.

I like the analogy.

Trump is for cutting government and destroying the status quo.

I don’t think trump will cut government... He may upset the statusquo, but he is a big government guy... Especially when he is in charge, and the precedents he sets will be used by all presidents to end government by the people.

And that means truth is supporting the pro-abortion (not long ago partial birth abortion), big spending ($34 Trillion per the latest analysis) pro-Single Payer, Pro-Subsidies, Pro-bank bailouts, pro-GOPe, so arrogant he is not willing to humble himself before God; after all he doesn’t need forgiveness.

This is “truth”. Truth is abandoning the principles you disdained DC Republicans for abandoning. You don’t see that.

Humans are frail and stupid.

Income tax policy. Anyone hoping for significant tax reform ought to think twice about Trump.

Have you read his tax plan? Do you just assume that it's just BS? I have read his plan as well as Cruz' plan and the major difference is Cruz has a single rate with additional taxes coming from a separate 16% Busines Tax {some call it a VAT tax, but it is not that} while Trump has 4 brackets from zero to 25.

It's possible that if either is elected that no change will happen, but if that occurs, it will be up to the new President to take his case directly to the voters. {I'd pay money to see that congress critter blood bath}.

Supreme Court appointments: this is where I think a President Trump will disappoint most profoundly. I fear that Trump would leave us with a liberal activist court for another generation and a half.

In spite of the fact that Trump has stated many times that he will appoint the most conservative judges he can find...Do you guys even listen to what Trump says or are you just trying to spin it to influence public opinion against Trump???

The emotion trumping the “facts” is anger; anger at the GOPe for continuously lying to constituents.

I’ll support a truth teller every time over the party liars. At least with Trump we MIGHT have an honest candidate, but with the establishment candidate we KNOW they are lying, we KNOW they will give us 4-8 more years of bigger government, greater debt, & continued decline of our country.

The beauty of the Trump candidacy is that, as a populist, he is dependent on the people to support his presidency. If he loses the confidence of the people he will have no chance at a 2nd term.

Trump represents democracy. The GOPe represents plutocracy.

Just wondering, would Mr. Sowell get as much notoriety if he were white?

That’s impressive. I like to listen to speakers while I work.

I know Sowell as a great thinker. His article was juvenile. He offered nothing to back up his ad hominem attacks. He spoke of Trump supporters as if we were the unwashed masses.

His article was purely snide and emotional with NONE of the intellectual thought that I’ve come to expect from the man’s writings.
