Donald Trump Hears a Lesson in Humility at Church
NYTimes ^ | Maggie Haberman and Amy Chozick

Donald J. Trump is not usually a candidate who invokes the words of evangelical voters. But on Sunday, he went to church in eastern Iowa, where he studied "humility," he later told attendees at a rally.

Mr. Trump sat for the entire service, which lasted over an hour, at First Presbyterian Church here, accompanied by Deborah Whitaker, whose son was killed in an accident shortly after returning from a tour of duty.

From the front of the church, the pastor acknowledged the presence of Mr. Trump, who sat in the fifth pew, with Ms. Whitaker to his right, sharing a book of prayer. When the collection plate was passed, Mr. Trump tossed in money; two crisp $50 bills peeked out from under a handful of singles minutes later.

He listened to a children's chorus and shook hands with people sitting behind him when it came time to offer greetings to others. Two of his security guards sat behind him, and his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, and his spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, sat in the pew in front of him.

Mr. Trump, who sometimes reminds people of his Presbyterian faith, has nonetheless generally avoided speaking the language of the more-religious voters in the Iowa caucuses. But at a rally on Sunday, he mentioned attending church.

"We talked about humility in church today," Mr. Trump told the crowd. "I don't know if that was aimed at me, perhaps," he joked, drawing laughs.

Truly sad when a man goes to church just for the appearances of it.

This is so ‘Obama’ I just can’t believe he did it.

Yes, I like touchback. BIG time. Who wouldn’t?

It comes with the help of the wall and massively increased border patrolling, until the wall is erected.

This gives our laws effectiveness, by capping the overwhelming numbers invading us from only one direction at their pleasure, and transfers entry to other regions where vetting actually matters, even at the point of departure.

And...Not the breeding strategy for making more democrats by rewarding the lawless, which you seem quite willing to tolerate.

So true. Presbyterians are ones who show their faith by doing our Saviors wishes, not broadcasting it.

I don’t think he goes to church weekly, but he does go every Christmas with his family to the same church in which he married his current wife, a church in Florida.

Obama went to church the first few weeks right after they moved into the white house. This was when the Obama is a muslim meme was peaking. Soon after him and the mooch went their separate ways each Sunday so he could worship at the altar of golf and weed.

editor, it might be best if you find a web site that meets your level of intelligence. According to your “tagline”, we don’t measure up. Please find a group that meets your thought lines and intelligence levels. We’d appreciate it.

Most people don't.

Not where I go. Loose cash in the collection plate is about 1% of our annual giving. 99% can be tied back to the givers, either through envelopes or checks.

[Trump] was introduced by the chairman of Republican Party of Iowa, Jeff Kaufmann, who is prohibited from making an endorsement. But he heaped praise on Mr. Trump and said he would easily support him as the party's nominee.

I can't find it now but, I'm pretty sure Kaufmann lobbed some harsh words at Cruz a week or two ago for his (conservative) plan to eliminate the ethanol mandate.

Very liberal PCUSA church. Wish he would go with the OPC or PCA for conservative Presbyterianism.

For his sake, I agree, but if he did, he'd open himself up to accusations of pandering to conservative Christians. Good or bad (mostly bad) he stuck with his denomination for the service.

You did!? Wow! I’m so proud for you! YEA!

The numbers are looking really good, and I keep thinking about what Scarborough said two weeks ago. “If this were and candidate but TRUMP, the media would have called this race by now.” Honestly, I think they are calling it now.

Dragging it out is theater and adds to the ratings and $$$ to the media, but nobody has numbers like this. Astounding.

The media checked the collection plate? But yet in 8 years can't find out anything about Obama

If Obama had any reason to pander to church-going voters, he would have gone to church (probably a white church), and you would have heard about it.

And then, if he'd been a billionaire, they would have looked in the offering plate, too.

When you can’t get 11 million new DUmocrats, you elect one...he’ll get it done for ya! Well, that is if you’re gullible enough to think someone who’s company is IMPORTING more unskilled Mexican labor is going to actually deport a single illegal.

It was great—hope you can get to one if he is anywhere nearby :) Here is my “report” post 331

The guys we stood in front of in line said they think Iowa will go to Trump—in part because the Governor, Branstad - longest serving governor told Iowan’s not to vote for Cruz last week...

Interesting.

It is about 40% of ours. People give their tithes in envelope and by check of course but most of us give cash in the offering basket.
