I think the reason is that the Turnpike doesn't have a chain law like states out west. 18 wheelers couldn't pull the west bound grade up to the Allegheny Mtn. Tunnel. Gridlock.
That could be. I've driven that stretch hundreds of times. What I don't understand is the trucks are restricted from driving in the passing lane there. One of the pictures I saw were two semis blocking the entrance to the tunnel. Someone is going to get a very big ticket.

This is probably a very stupid question. Why don’t they have chain laws there? Out here we close roads to any traffic without chains or snow tires, when it gets really bad, chains required. 18 wheelers out here drive with chains hanging from the side and pull over and chain up when required.
And we don’t get anywhere near the kind of snow I’m seeing in those pictures. Plows are running when the snow starts falling here.
