Literally thousands of people are trapped on the Penn Turnpike around the Alleghany Tunnel, including hundreds of kids from several states in charter buses that attended the March-For-Life rally in DC (ZERO press coverage, of course), and a couple of college sports teams, as well as hundreds of trucks, and cars.
Been listening to the Scanner feed of turnpike police for a couple of hours now, since my nephew is one of the cops in this mess. It's a real mess. They are trying to get food up there, and get people out.
Many have already spent one night on the mountain, and are looking at staying tonight, as well.

That is dreadful——and scary if you’re in one of those cars.
It happened to a friend of ours pre-cell phone days and he said it was a dreadful experience since he didn’t have a clue about what was going on.
He was there all night-——sitting and wondering.

Duquesne men's basketball team spent last night stuck on the highway, and is still there.

Oh man!
I travel the turnpike fairly often. Can’t imagine how they are dealing with Laurel Mountain.

I can still remember my Dad driving the family back to Ohio from New Jersey in a snowstorm on the Pensy Turnpike, at night. Even the truckers weren’t running. The car was a ‘63/’64 Chevy I think.

The Right-to-life kids from several states built a snow altar, so they could hold mass this afternoon. This is cool...

Wow. So this is different than the one in Kentucky? I read about something similar there..
What a nightmare for these people. May God protect them.

This morning a young female weekend shift reporter (Melanie something) from WPXI (channel 11) in Pittsburgh ventured to the Bedford TPike exit—she had a bunch of teens, from Nebraska, on air with her. The teens were inspiring—they were already 17 hours on the bus back from DC from the Right to Life March, but they were so upbeat and one young girl said to the affect that she “offered up” her inconvenience of the storm “for the babies to be born.” She was just a faithfilled young woman speaking eloquently. I was impressed that the station and reporter LET them speak in several segments.
And the Duquesne Dukes men’s bball team was stuck too...I was told they were sheltering a couple stranded families on their bus (they had room).
What a mess...the TPike, by Allegheny Tunnels is really an engineering feat when you consider the topography.

The PA Turnpike is ripe for this kind of chaos. For one thing, it runs through higher elevations in the Allegheny Mountains where it snows a lot. To make matter worse, much of the highway was built on a former railroad right-of-way so it is very narrow. I think the longest distance between interchanges is 36 miles, and when you drive along that stretch you have a concrete barrier on your left and lots of hills and ridges on your right.

Literally thousands of people are trapped on the Penn Turnpike around the Alleghany Tunnel,
Can't say they weren't warned........
With that being said, I've ventured out in severe winter conditions when I shouldn't have and was lucky to get to my destination and back. I could just as easy have been one of them.........
