A messy portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike has been shut down do to snowy conditions, and several groups are rushing in to help.
The Turnpike is closed in both directions between the Breezewood exit and the New Stanton exit so that crews can clear the roads. Additionally, all commercial vehicles are banned between the New Stanton exit and the Delaware River Bridge, and on the Northeastern Extension between the Mid County exit and the Pocono exit.
There are a number of vehicles stuck on the closed section of the Turnpike, and the National Guard has been called in to help.
According to a release from the governorâs office, multiple trucks and tractor trailers had trouble making it up a hill in the westbound lane of the Turnpike, causing traffic to back up and preventing emergency crews from reaching the disabled vehicles and clearing snow.
Turnpike officials say crews have taken fuel and rations to travelers who have been stuck since Friday evening, and the Western Pennsylvania Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services was working to send 4,000 meals as of 3 p.m. Saturday.

Been listening to the Scanner feed of turnpike police for a couple of hours now, since my nephew is one of the cops in this mess. It's a real mess. They are trying to get food up there, and get people out.
Many have already spent one night on the mountain, and are looking at staying tonight, as well.
That is dreadful——and scary if you’re in one of those cars.
It happened to a friend of ours pre-cell phone days and he said it was a dreadful experience since he didn’t have a clue about what was going on.
He was there all night-——sitting and wondering.
.
Spent one of those kind of nights out on the Indiana turnpike once...
Oh man!
I travel the turnpike fairly often. Can’t imagine how they are dealing with Laurel Mountain.
I can still remember my Dad driving the family back to Ohio from New Jersey in a snowstorm on the Pensy Turnpike, at night. Even the truckers weren’t running. The car was a ‘63/’64 Chevy I think.
Its as if it has never snowed there before and folks were unaware that the snow was forcasted.
LOL!
That stuff looks like the wet stuff.
The worst kind.
CNN has covered a bus that was stuck, with live interview.
That’s good packin snow!
Just hung up with my sis in Philly. Said it was really coming down.
I know....
Back when i lived at Lake Tahoe i would see 3 to 5 feet of snow fall in one day, and yet Caltrans had it cleared in 24 hours so people could get to the casinos at Stateline.
Maybe they should commandeer a fleet of International corn harvesters, chain up the tires, add a giant propane tank and a fire cannon.
Hey its been done in Britain.....
Depends upon your perspective. It’s the worst for driving and clearing the roads, but the best for snowballs, snowmen and snow forts.
Wow. So this is different than the one in Kentucky? I read about something similar there..
What a nightmare for these people. May God protect them.
These are kids from my parish!
Question, why weren’t these highways shut down. All knew a big snow event was coming
The storm track changed rather quickly and unexpectedly. Southern PA was not in the crosshairs of the big accumulations as far as any forecast until fairly late in the game, with the snow already coming down.
