Ramesh Ponnuru: Why immigration is a big deal to conservatives
Dallas Morning News ^ | 21 January 2016 09:51 AM | Ramesh Ponnuru

Nikki Haley, the governor of South Carolina, is the latest Republican to learn how important immigration has become to conservatives. In her response to the State of the Union address, she argued both that immigrants should be made to feel welcome and that we have to maintain control of our immigration policy. For these comments, she was denounced in some quarters as a moderate who had declared war on her own party's strongest supporters. Both the speech and the reaction offer more evidence that immigration control is becoming a more important, and defining, issue for conservatives.

Why the issue has become central is less clear. It's not because the problem of illegal immigration is growing; it has fallen in recent years. But that decline has coincided with at least seven factors that have raised the political importance of immigration for the right.

...

1. Low economic growth.

...

2. Demographic changes among Republicans.

...

3. The growth of the immigrant population.

...

4. The unresponsiveness of elites.

...

5. Partisan politics.

...

6. The progress of arguments among conservatives.

...

7. Cascading effects.

It is immigration, legal and illegal. Immigrants take American jobs and depress wages.

8. Terrorism
9. National security-—if your borders are open, you are defenseless.
10. Sharia law.

Immigration policy should be designed the way most rational counties in the world design their policies.

Namely, immigrants who will be a net contributor to this country and embrace American values are welcome.

Immigrants hostile to those values or likely to become a ward of the state are not. We already have an oversupply of slackers and anti-Americans.

And commit crimes and take up prison space and force towns to build schools and hospitals and hire police without paying for any of it.

We have an oversupply of immigrants period. Why are we bringing in 1.1 million legal permanent immigrants a year along with 640,000 guest workers annually while we have the lowest labor participation rates in 38 years?

The elites have taken it upon themselves to change our homes, or culture, our heritage.

And, as you said, they didn't bother asking if we approve.

From the comments:

The reason Democrats are able to block efforts to restrict illegal immigration is that the GOP is fundamentally at war with itself over the issue.

One camp consists of traditional free-market pro-business conservatives who favor immigration because it drives down wages and dilutes the power of labor unions that immigrants are unlikely to join. Another plus is that many immigrants leave the country when the job market is depressed, rather than sticking around and relying on budget-sucking social welfare.

However, the other camp consists of lower-income and often less-educated voters, many of whom have been driven towards the GOP by a variety of culture-war issues. These voters may make noise about supporting smaller government, but when push comes to shove, they accept big-government solutions to issues that directly affect their pocketbooks—such as wage competition from immigrants.

The GOP pro-business establishment has assumed that by giving lukewarm support to the unworkable sham non-solution of "border security", they can maintain the favorable status quo, while blaming the lack of progress on Obama. Their problem is that this strategy has a limited lifespan, as the other more populist GOP camp is increasingly realizing what they're up to, and the threat of drowning under a shifting demographic tide looms larger and larger.

Too much jibberish spoken everywhere you go, combined with arrogance. And a correct sense of something that has never happened in reference to immigration, a correct sense that the powers that be are -deliberately- trying to destroy the American culture we all lived in and enjoyed.

Those might be reasons for the people who aren't directly in contact with the "new" illegal aliens, but for those of us that live on the border or close to a "coyote trail", it's "WHO" is coming across the border now. Giving food or drinks to sheep shearers and crop pickers as they came through the area has been replaced with loaded weapons and locked doors.

The media likes to "wax eloquent" about unaccompanied children, but they NEVER report about the increased numbers of illegals crossing the border that are criminals, drug smugglers, gang members, or "Asians" (as the UK likes to say).

Because we realize that, like with Labour in England, unrestricted immigration from 3rd world countries is a political strategy of the Democrat party.

Afraid this has become sadly obvious in light of reckless immigration policy, open borders and lax enforcement action, here and across europe.
The powers that be can’t create and control a New World Order, until their chaos and destruction ensures stable civilization and high culture is nothing but a memory.

Re: “Why the issue [immigration] has become central is less clear.”

Let me give you a little hint, Ramesh...

Maybe because new immigrant citizens vote 80% for the Democrat Party?

How long do you think the Democrats would allow massive legal immigration if new immigrant citizens voted 80% for the Republican Party?
