Survey: US ranks as 4th best country in the world

Frankly, I'm surprised the US is ranked as high as it is in this firest ever US News and World Report survey of the best countries in the world.

Is it ironic the Germany is #1? When you consider the history of the last century, you have to think so.

Canada ranks #2 and Great Britain #3. The survey, conducted by the magazine and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and global brand consultants BAV Consulting, took into account 24 factors to make their determinations.

Washington Post:

The new project ranks 60 countries across 24 categories and is based on a survey of more than 16,000 people.

The United States ranked first in power and influence. Sweden scored the most top spots, ranking first for being the best country for citizenship, raising kids and green living. Other top rankings include Brazil for adventure; Luxembourg for opening a business; France for cultural influence; Germany for entrepreneurship; Canada for quality of life; Italy for heritage; and India for its up-and-coming economy. In the end, Germany scored highest overall.

The ranking relied on surveys from 16,248 people from 36 countries in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa. Of those, more than 8,000 were "informed elites" (college-educated, middle- or upper-class individuals). More than 4,500 were business leaders, defined as senior leaders in an organization or individuals who own small business that employ others. The rest belonged to the general public.

Each respondent was asked to share his or her perceptions on a random selection of 65 attributes for a random selection of countries. The attributes were each scored and grouped into nine broader categories: adventure, citizenship, cultural influence, entrepreneurship, heritage, movers, open for business, power and quality of life.

Of course Germany is a great place to live! Pretty much all the buildings were built in 1946 or later! Everything is new!

I guess cost of living, gun rights and private property rights were not considered ranking.

RE: Does this mean we’re going to have another World War to get to #1?

If it takes a disaster of that magnitude, perhaps. But it’s going to take many generations to bounce back.

That’s what happened to Germany.

Gun Rights, even if they were to consider this as a factor will LOWER your score.

Depends on who you’re asking the question to.

If you want “free” ( (note the quotes ), single-payer healthcare, Canuckistan will be it.

Surveys like this drive magazine sales, but are meaningless. What are the trends? How are the criteria defined? How are criteria weighted? Is the rating from the point of view of citizens or non-citizens?

What about geographical areas? For example, there are placed in the US that are worse than most countries. Are those areas excluded or averaged in?

And the range of scores for the top 10 are only 3 points from 91 to 94. What is the margin of error?

More meaningful would be a report putting nations into groups, and giving the strengths, weaknesses, and trends of each. But that wouldn't drive magazine sales.

My English born and raised wife now says Britain is a nice place to visit, but she wouldn't want to live there. Just not enough room for her.

Actually, after several visits to Britain, it is a very nice place to visit. But I was too cramped. Give me the wide open spaces of America please.

Based on the questions, the US is 4th because we're not liberal enough

There are (unfortunately) large numbers of Americans who base quality of life on what gov. does for them. They just don't get America. The ideal country is one where gov. has as little influence on your life as possible.

We've got too much gov. meddling here, but it's nothing like European "paradises."
