Ted Cruz Aims Directly at Donald Trump for 1st Time
NBC News ^ | Jan 19 2016 | Vaughn Hillyard

WHITEFIELD, New Hampshire - Ted Cruz challenged Donald Trump directly by name for the first time on the campaign trail - despite his refusal for months to engage in a "cage match" with the GOP frontrunner.

"There are many people that are observing this race nationally [who say it] is coming more and more down to a two-man race between me and Donald Trump," Cruz said. "And we're at the phase in the race where the voters are beginning to look very, very carefully at the records of the candidates."

Cruz has consistently avoided attacking or questioning Trump.

But on Monday night, Cruz willingly highlighted Trump's record, drawing contrasts with him for the first time on the campaign trail.

Cruz rehashed the debate in 2013 over the Senate's comprehensive immigration measure and then asked the crowd of 100 to reflect on Trump's whereabouts during the conservative backlash.

"We were on the verge of losing this fight and 12 million people here illegally being granted amnesty," Cruz said. "And yet, when that fight was being fought, Donald was nowhere to be found."

He then told the voters they have "reason to doubt the credibility" of a candidate who takes these hardline positions only after announcing his candidacy.

Cruz also highlighted TARP, the 2008 bank bailout, as well as the stimulus package passed by Congress in 2009.

"On both of those, I opposed it," Cruz stated. "On both of those, Mr. Trump supported them."

He then squared up an attack on eminent domain, suggesting Trump "supports using government power to seize private people's homes to give them to giant corporations to, say, hypothetically build a casino."

Cruz still says he has "no intention of reciprocating" the "insults" launched by Trump.

"I will continue to sing his praises personally," Cruz added. "But I do think policy difference are fair game."

Earlier Monday, Cruz also noted Trump's past support for universal healthcare coverage.

Where other GOP candidates have faltered and fallen after challenging Trump, Cruz's approach - policy-driven and meticulously-worded - could be an effective disarming of his rival just two weeks before the Iowa caucus.

Rich Kardell, a physician who drove an hour for the event from Gorham with his two sons, arrived to the event wavering between voting for Trump and Cruz. After the event, Kardell's perception had changed.

"Donald has kind of gone both ways and changed his opinion," Kardell said. "Everybody changes their opinion, but it seems that Donald has different reasons for changing his opinion."

Kardell suggested Cruz "addressed Donald appropriately" and led him to question what would "stop [Trump] from changing his line later."

And Steve Jesseman, a campground owner from Lisbon, refused to rule Trump out for his vote after Cruz's Monday night event, but he said he is now "closer to voting for Cruz than when I got here."

"[Cruz] provided the contrasts, but he did it nicely," Jesseman said. "He didn't do it cruelly."

Over the last several days, Trump hurled personal attacks at Cruz, calling the Texas senator "bitter" and "testy" and "nasty."

Trump supported TARP, auto bailout and Porkulus bill, i.e., Trump is for big government and big businesses.

And, of course, he is for Renewable Fuel Standard (ethanol mandate), so governement can pick winners and losers.

Trump's Record on Free-market Issue: (from the Conservative Review)

Trump has a terrible record on free market issues. The only bright spot is the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing, but this glimmer is countermanded by his repeated support for bailing out Wall Street and the auto industry, and increased stimulus spending. Of particular concern is Trump's belief that the government can use eminent domain powers to seize private property in the name of private economic development. This comes as no surprise, given his support for using eminent domain to profit his own company.

Trump supported the Supreme Court’s 2005 decision in Kelo v. City of London, allowing public authorities to seize private land for economic development by private investors; Trump said, “I happen to agree with [the decision] 100 percent.” (National Review)  This is no surprise given Trump’s attempt to use eminent domain in his own line of work. (Institute for Justice)

Trump supported President Obama’s 2009 stimulus, saying: “The word stimulus is probably not used in its fullest…you know, certain of the things that were given weren't really stimulus. They were pork, as we call it, or they were gifts to certain people. But overall, I think he's [President Obama] doing very well. You do need stimulus and you do have to keep the banks alive.” (CNN

Trump supported TARP, saying, "You had to do something to shore up the banks, because ... you would have had a run on every bank." (CNN

Trump supported the 2008 auto bailout, saying, “I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent. You cannot lose the auto companies. They’re great. They make wonderful products.” He also said that the federal government could “easily save the companies.” (Daily Caller

Trump criticized the Federal Reserve’s intervention in the debt market, saying quantitative easing creates “phony numbers” that mislead the marketplace and “will not ultimately benefit the economy. The dollar will go down in value and inflation will start rearing its ugly head.” (CNBC

Donald Trump has a history of using eminent domain to complete business deals. Multiple times Trump has supported the use of government agencies to take possession of homes and businesses for use in his private business plans. Eminent domain seizures are reserved only for public use of property rather than abuse by the government taking property from one individual and giving to another. (Washington Post

Donald Trump has sought and received crony capitalist tax breaks for his commercial properties in New York. These tax breaks, and even an abatement, force the property taxes of other property owners to rise at the expense of the connected. Special treatment for one business or industry over another with the tax code conflicts with free market principles. (National Review

In 2009, Trump supported Barack Obama's call for limits on the pay of executives. (CNN)

I thought Cruz said yesterday, he wasn’t going to engage in Trump
fights.

Yet, less than 24 hours after he said that, he is starting another fight.

Smart to attack Trump on TARP. It is at the heart of the populist wave he’s been riding.

2003. California Recall Election. The voters went for the flash(Arnold). and not the true believer(McLintock). Together the 2 Republicans got 60% of the vote in a blue state that was in deep trouble. I feel the U.S. is going down the same road. Gotta read the book Thomas Sowell recommended in his column today.

I like Trump and admire him in a lot of ways. He’s certainly been good for New York on the whole, and he’s been a boon to other communities. Not everything he has done worked (he’s declared bankruptcy more than once), but on the whole, he’s done well and helped communities.

The Wollman Rink is a fine example of what Trump can do when he wants to.

I salute Trump for these things. And it occurs to me that if he were elected, he might be the first president who wouldn’t have to build a new presidential library — he could just put it in the Trump Tower. (OTOH, with the Secret Service crawling around, it might get quite difficult to get in and out of that building.)

But Trump’s stated views on issues are mixed at best, tending to the “progressive” side on a lot of key issues. Cruz has been much more consistent in defending conservative values and principles than Trump has. And neither is afraid of a fight.

Cruz is smart. He’s not going after Donald personally, a Heb likes to do, but contrasting their views on issues while maintaining a respectful, friendly relationship, even as Trump is calling him names. That has to redound to Cruz’s benefit.

Cruz is the one candidate in either prty who worries Trump. Polls are showing that in a head-to-head match, Cruz beats Trump one on one. No other candidate would.

That’s why the Trumpkins are beating on the dead horse of this phony eligibility nonissue. It’s why they had Marco come after him and suggest that he’s not really conservative (in exchange for the VP slot?). It’s why they keep beating up on Heidi.

None of that helps Donald, but it definitely helps Ted.
