Controversy over symbols and relics leftover from the American Civil War is hardly new. Earlier this year editorial and journalistic outrage was directed at supporters of the Confederate battle flag; but now in Minnesota a new angle on Civil War controversy is brewing. Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, wants up to six paintings of Civil War events currently displayed in the state Capitol potentially removed to less visible locations.
None of the paintings present Confederate forces in a positive light, and none of them feature a Confederate battle flag. In fact, each painting depicts Minnesota soldiers bravely charging into battle or enduring the dreary monotony of long foot marches as they wage war to preserve the union and end slavery.
...
Dayton has never served in the military, was a Vietnam War protester, voted against authorizing the Iraq War while serving as a U.S. Senator, and introduced legislation in the Senate to create a cabinet-level federal Department of Peace and Nonviolence.
...
Dayton a "Loser of the Day" for "For dishonoring both history and the sacrifice of thousands of his state's residents who fought in the Civil War."

The so-called Governor has a direct ancestor of note:
Johnahan Dayton
Wikipedia:
He was the youngest person to sign the United States Constitution and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as the third Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and later the U.S. Senate.
Dayton was arrested in 1807 for treason in connection with Aaron Burr's conspiracy; Dayton was never tried, but his national political career never recovered.

So this Governor is a radical leftist who hates the military? And what else is new in the Democrat party?
To: george76
What is controversial about the paintings?

Dishonoring the memory of some very brave soldiers. It is arguable that the First Minnesota turned back the assault on the Union center at Gettysburg, saving the day. While Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain gets (justified) credit for saving the Union flank at the Round Tops, without Winfield Scott Hancock and the Minnesotans holding the center, Longstreet may have broken through and given the Confederates a victory.
And this is the reward those men get. From a Democrat, wouldn't you know?

A decade ago I predicted here that those who cheered on the removal of Confederate symbology, statues and art would come to rue supporting this form of historical cleansing as it might begin with Jefferson Davis but it would not end until it encompassed Lincoln, Washington and Hamilton. Dopey Dayton is busy trying to cleanse the memory of Minnesota's soldiers in the War Between the States. Eventually it will be US soldiers in World war Two because of the racist and homophobic nature of the society they represent or some such fecal matter.

When they get done removing all references to dead white guys, the will start on dead other color guys- then will be the women
Hard to stop this cleansing of ones history- always there is someone with an axe to grind- pretty soon no history is left
