GLENN FREY EAGLES GUITARIST DEAD AT 67
TMZ ^ | 1/17/2016

Posted on 01/18/2016 2:01:14 PM PST by Borges

Glenn Frey, a founding member and guitarist of the Eagles, has died ... TMZ has learned. Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November. We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse. Glenn co-wrote and sang most of the Eagles hits, including "Take It Easy," "Tequila Sunrise," "Lyin' Eyes," and "Heartache Tonight," to name a few. He also co-wrote "Hotel California" and "Desperado" with Don Henley and took home 6 Grammys with the band. After the Eagles' 1980 breakup, Glenn launched a successful solo career, recording numerous hits ... most notably "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City." Glenn also got into acting, snagging a recurring role on "Miami Vice." He reunited with the Eagles in '94 for their monster Hell Freezes Over tour and recorded music till the end, releasing what would be his fifth and final solo LP, "After Hours," in 2012. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been fighting intestinal issues for awhile but his condition relapsed before the holidays, forcing the Eagles to pull out of their Kennedy Center Honors appearance in December. At the time, the band said he needed major surgery that would require a lengthy recovery, but it appears he was never able to bounce back. Glenn was 67. RIP.

I didn’t know that at the time.

Just shows Frey’s solo stuff was even worse than Henley’s.

The Heat is On?

That’s as bad as it gets.

The original master tape provides the highest sound quality with each copy/generation a lower & lower quality. The differences are easily discernable.

As an aside, my friend created the audiophile market to go back to the true, original master tapes when remastering. Before, 2nd and 3rd generation tapes were routinely used.

So always be careful when you purchase a “remastered” version - it may not have been sourced from the original studio tapes.

That’s why the real, master tape is so treasured.

Interesting you mentioned vinyl LPs. My friend remastered most of the classic jazz albums to vinyl LP.

I visited him in LA at a mastering studio & LP pressing plant with my Japanese partners who produced uber-high end vacuum tube amplifiers costing up to $300k. As a gift, Steve cut test lacquers of the Doobie Brothers “Minute by Minute” LP. The lacquer is cut direct from the master tape feeding the lathe and has only 50 plays in it.

The typical LP (except for Direct-to-Disk) are 2 generations down the chain so out test lacquers are as close to the master tapes as possible.

My masterig friend has gifted me with many, many CDRs burned direct from the master tapes he remastered of Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Beach Boys, Miles Davis, Ray Charles - some “dry” (before the commercial reverb was added.

A very special gift was the entire Beatles catalog including studio demos never released made when he visited Abbey Road to discuss remastering the catalog. To hear studio chatter is really awesome.

But after hearing the master tapes played back, not even $1 Million stereo systems that I’ve heard and provided equipment comes close to those RtR master tapes.

Funny story re: Ray Charles. When my friend agreed to remaster a group of Ray’s albums, he and his label partner handed Ray a check that was also encoded in Braile. Ray “felt” the braile, “read” it and proclaimed, “Boys, we have a deal!” Funny stuff!

I’m beginning to ramble but enjoy sharing these inside glimpses...hope you enjoyed my ramblings.

George Gershwin was a stealer of souls?

I don’t like the liberal debauched pop idol Glenn Frey, who made mainly lousy music.

You do.

Worship of pop idols is not something to be proud of and it is not trolling to point it out.

You seem a firm member of the Church of the Perpetually Offended.

A person can like music secular or Gospel music and not be a worshiper of the artist. I liked the Eagles music myself I grew up on it from my early teens when they were getting started. I bought Don Henleys album Dirty Laundry a sone exposing the news media on that album was a pleasant surprise a song respectfully done called The Uncloudy Day the one found in most Hymnals. I have an Eric Clapton album on it is Swing Low Sweet Chariot again respectfully done. Then there was a rock group in my teens out of Leavenworth, Kansas. Just a group of rural Kansas kids playing rock. They had their battles with alcohol and drugs. Their lead guitarist and songwriter and their bass player eventually left the band. The bands biggest hits was Carry on my Wayward son and Dust in the wind. The songs written by a band member who became a devout Christian about the time he wrote those two songs. Later other members besides him and the bass player accepted Christ.

Look at Lynyrd Skynyrd the ones who survived. Billy Powell the piano player who stayed with the new formed post crash group was a Christian and played in church. His conversion came after the plane crash. You know that whining guitar sole starting out on the song Freebird. Rossington the last still living pre-crash member plays that. He is a Christian. The song "That Smell" was written about him before the plane crash. People can change. That includes rockers.

There's all kinds of music. What about Folk? Ever hear of Peter, Paul, and Mary? Paul Stookey is a devout Christian and even in the bands beginning penned a song called "Early in the morning" a prayer put to lyrics. Later he would pen and not accept money or credit for a wedding song he wrote for Peter Yarrow and his bride's wedding. Many Christians have had Stookey's The wedding song {There is love} played at their weddings. A liberal? Yeah all three were. But I like their music. And no Puff The Magic Dragon is not about pot it's about a young boy's growth from the imaginary friend to adulthood just as the lyrics say. The author had been studying Grimm's fairytales when he wrote it. Actually he left it on a typewriter at a friends house who didn't show up for lunch and it resurfaced later on.

Country music is a good one. A man in his 29 years on earth would pen some of the most popular country as well as some great Gospel songs in his era. "I saw the light", Lost Highway, House of Gold to name a few. He suffered severe physical pain most of his life due to a birth defect few knew about back in his days as a star. He had an open spine which little could be done for. He was addicted to pain pills and alcohol and he died at age 29 of a heart attack after he had been sober and was returning to perform again. His name was Hank Williams Sr.

What about the pot smoking Willie Nelson? Hum My my the scandal of that there sinner indeed. Willie and his sister Bobbie were raised by their grandparents and sang in church his sister played piano even today in his band. Willies best work though isn't his secular hits of which he has written and sang many. His best works is an album he cut in the mid 1970's called The Troublemaker. All taken out of a church Hymnal. When the roll is called up yonder, The Uncloudy Day, In the Garden, Whispering Hope, There is a fountain, Will the circle be unbroken, In the sweet by and by, Shall we gather at the river, & Precious Memories. That is likely my favorite album of all and I have hundreds. It's the one I listened too for years both while in the Navy and later when I was teaching myself how to finally play a guitar. Then there is Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash was the main inspiration for a song called The Pilgrim Chapter 33. He had his battles.

I know about some artist because I learn about them and their music. You know who Anthony Burger was right? He was a Southern Gospel prodigy piano player. He was also a cut up on stage with The Cathedrals I think it was. The man played I've got that old time religion on the piano while laying down on the bench.

Each person in life has their own battles. Each person must decide themselves what they will do with Jesus Christ accept Him or reject Him. For some it comes early on in acceptance. For others it may be a death bed acceptance. Is it too late even then? No. It's too late when one has taken their last breath and their physical life is over.

Frey was by no means one of my favorite entertainers even though I liked The Eagles. I hope in the time of his last days He accepted Christ. I hope as much even for those who have harmed me. I hope the same even for men like Ted Kennedy and Obama that they too received or receive Christ as Lord and savior. Pray for the harvest that is is plenty and all be saved. We do not know the disposition of Glen Frey's soul. GOD will judge that.

I'm a non perfect but forgiven by Grace sinner awaiting the time to be with The Lord. It's not how long you are a Christian that saves you. Remember the parable of the laborers and who was paid last and first and who began last and first. When you accept Christ you're sealed in His Blood. Even the thief of the cross who asked was saved.

Well I reckon it was just put on me. I saw a lot of condemning of a man no one knew the last days and hours of. Many artist have been condemned by persons who knew little about them. I pointed some out :>} I hope the man made his peace with The Lord, not that he burns for a song he wrote or sang.

Apparently, you have some good information. Thanks.

I've been drawn to music since my early childhood and over the years bought a lot of music. I also read bits and pieces and later heard interview of the artist themselves. The Paul Stookey story I read in Guide Post. The Lynyrd Skynyrd story is pretty open and a lot written and filmed about them. Collins in his last years when confined to a wheelchair showed a lot of remorse. Hank Williams Sr I read about. Willie Nelson's Troublemaker album I bought on a whim in the ships store at sea. Best buy on a whim music wise I've had. The group Kansas the main writer and lead guitarist was Kery Livgren and has his own website both about music and ministry links. I read the lyrics also.

The song I find most depressing lyrics wise in Rock was "Imagine" not because of the music it was great. Lennon had lots of piano and writing talent. The Lyrics of that song though were an anthem for secular humanism and Communism. I could not stand the song once I read them. I hope he too in his final days came to Christ. We'll not know here on this earth.

As for Johnny Cash? Look up a movie called The Gospel Road. It is a video he and June did on the life of Christ. Cash battled addiction most of his life. One of his last pieces is "When the man comes around" a read of parts of the book of Revelation. He recorded it after June died best I remember.

Yeah no one did.

Not sure what Kansas or Rossington or a bunch of other examples gave to do with Glenn Frey.

Anyhow, I love Hank.

Can you point me to Frey’s gospel songs?

“James Taylor, Paul Simon, Hall&Oats, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Linda Rhonstadt, Jim Croce, The Who, The Guess Who, BTO, etc. etc. etc. not to mention the best soul; Tempts, 4Tops, Al Green, Spinners, Manhattans, Tower of Power”They didn’t show up until the Eagles broke the barrier. And James Taylor Paul Simon, Hall and Oats, Jim Croce, and the Guess Who didn;t rock at all. Soft pop. But then I’m a Rockabilly nut!. Couldn’t stand bands like Deep Purpless, ELO, etc. Not Rock!
