President Obama, in his last State of the Union speech Tuesday, again called for closing the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, terrorist prison.
According to U.S. defense officials, the Pentagon wants to build a new prison near the federal high-security prison outside Colorado Springs under a controversial plan to bring more than 50 Islamic terrorists from Cuba to the United States.
The Pentagon has begun emptying the military prison as part of a White House push to close the Guantanamo Bay facility before Mr. Obamaâs term ends. But Mr. Obama is facing several serious legal, political and financial hurdles.
First, federal law prohibits closing the facility and building a new one on the U.S. mainland under provisions added by Congress to both the defense authorization and appropriations acts signed by the president last year. Mr. Obama has said the Gitmo provisions of the law donât apply to him since they infringe his powers as commander in chief.
However, analysts in government say the legal barriers to ignoring the congressional provisions are too high.
Financially, the costs of setting up a new facility are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Closing Guantanamo and building a new U.S. military prison would cost about $600 million, The Wall Street Journal reported last month. The president reportedly ordered the Pentagon to explore cheaper options.
A defense official said a new prison in Florence, Colorado, is a favored option because of its remote location and because it could draw on resources from the nearby Supermax facility. As military detainees, the Guantanamo prisoners cannot be placed directly within the population at the high-security federal prison.

It's simple, Obama is on their side.
They talked about this last year.
Colorado’s governor, an Obama follower & believer, has agreed already.
Obama wants the terrorists to have full access to the courts to make a mockery of our laws.
And many would be released because they were Mirandized on the battlefield!
Congress should send him legislation Authorizing the Whole Expenditure to build the new prison ion Martha’s Vineyard!
Or rent it to China who would love a base in this hemisphere to complement its position in Panama, thanks to Jimminey Kartrr.
... at the same time bring a few score al Qaeda into the country where they’ll be turned loose, with the full rights of legal American residents, after serving as little time as Obama can get away with.
Rocky Colorado.
A nice view. Snowmen. Maybe they could hit the slopes? How delightful. And if they escape or get to recruit US inmates, what ‘joy’.
A nice change of pace.
They should transfer the prisoners to some remote US territory, like American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands.
They should build a facility on one of the more remote Aleutian Islands for them.
Interesting idea. PR is in bad economic shape, I’m sure they would welcome the “investment” that would be required to house and maintain these Muslim gangstas.
What a ridiculous idea. The moment these guys touch down on American soil, lawyers will be filing motions in court. These guys will be granted full constitutional rights.
They won’t be charged with a crime because there is zero chance of conviction under US Constitutional Rules. Besides that, they committed no crime on US Soil.
Why not leave them right where they are?
What is it...367 days until Barry exits? Is that even enough time to build a new facility?
Rush could start a whole new line of Gitmo gear...parkas and ski hats.
I insist it be California, and not in prison, but released and given affordable housing and generous welfare benefits.
‘Allah-Warms-Me’ Ear muffs.
No need to build anything. See my FReeper profile for a suggestion, just add terrorists to the mix.
Obama should hire you to make that very case. I think some plush real estate would be nice where the actors live these days. Let the terrorists play tennis with’em before sword practice.
Real-life ‘action scene’ experience.
