A very insightful PBS documentary "The Immigration Battle" lays out exactly what took place during the 2013/2014 legislative time frame (i.e., Gang of 8). If you have not watched the documentary I would strongly recommend you do so, it is profoundly enlightening.
The documentary walks you through a timeline explaining exactly who was doing what at the times discussed.

They had enough votes to pass it.

On Tuesday June 10th Speaker Boehner, Eric Cantor (Majority Leader) and Kevin McCarthy (Majority Whip) had lunch together discussing timing the vote Thursday night or Friday Morning.
However, later that same night...Dave Brat defeated (primaried) Eric Cantor.

The next day, Wednesday June 11th, the House of Representatives was also in a state of shock - Almost the entire reason for the defeat was the controversial immigration position of Cantor.
Immediately panicked GOP congresscritters were calling Kevin McCarthy and revoking their previous (2 days earlier) positions of support for the bill. By lunchtime Wednesday June 11th it was obvious the Immigration Bill was NOW DEAD in the House.

What is most scary was that it was OUR PARTY, not the Democrats who nearly carried the plan through. They will try again, until (and unless) the Illegals are finally sent packing.
Was he lying then or is he lying now.
You believe liberal/socialist PBS or conservative Cruz?
Well Cruz was either lying when he said that his now “poison pill” was absolutely needed to get the Amnesty Bill passed (that was back when he was pushing it), or Cruz is lying today when he says that he never wanted to get the bill passed and was just trying to kill it.
I tend to believe the pre-Trump Cruz as Illegal Immigration was never a big issue for him until recently and he was VERY CLEAR at the time that he wanted Rubio’s bill to pass.
In any case, Cruz did single-handedly manage to stop the House from passing it’s “Principals on Immigration”, in Jan 2014, which would have put them on the road to cutting a deal with the Senate to “get the issue behind us”. That actually was a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT and he should be touting that, instead of trying to rectify a mistake.

He said his amendment to increase the H1-B five fold was only a poison pill.
Then last October he renounced his poison pill he continue to push after the Gang of Eight Bill was history.
So you tell me who to believe. It certainly wasn’t Ted on this one.
Ping! In case you haven’t seen this...
Well, thank you Eric Cantor, and thank you David Brat.
“It was the 7th Congressional District of Virgimia that changed the world.”
The little district that CHANGED THE WORLD!
Can you or any of the other trumpers believe what other real conservative senators and representatives say in their support of Cruz and their plan for the “Rubio Citizenship Bill”? It is not just Cruz that was behind the poison pills.
I am coming to believe that anyone of the candidates who currently is in position to possibly win this thing will give us Amnesty and the permanent One Party Democrat State. Cruz and Trump have both been slid sounding on closing the border and expelling the lawbreakers but have equivocated on some form of Amnesty. And we all know about Rubio and Bush is forthright about his desire to turn the country over to the Democrats totally and permanently. And then there are Mrs. Bill and Sanders.
“Amnesty died exclusively because candidate Dave Brat beat House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Period.”
Virginia stands in the breach.
Great post! I hate to say it, but I think our current GOP leadership is getting ready to cave on amnesty. Heck, Ryan has already funded it! That said, this election is a sham. With 20 million “free lunch” voters...it was decided long ago...
“It was the 7th Congressional District of Virgimia that changed the world. “
Where the fuze was lit.
I tend to agree...we’re getting something. I see Cruz, at best, as trying to again “look the other way” but that can’t hold forever - the stars will line up again for the Dems to pass Amnesty, and THEY WILL NOT BLOW IT this time.
I go with Trump. Send them home - invite the ones back that can make this country better, leave the others on the other side of the border.
Specifically, what were the poison pills?
It was his poison pill that gave the pro amnesty vote cover to vote against it. That is what a poison pill amendment does.
I wish them luck...
I live in Dave Brat’s district (lucky me). The absolute shock that ensued after Brat’s victory rocked the foundations of the Congress. Yes, that is what up-ended the immigration bill. You’re welcome.
