Watch: Teenage pop star's humiliating apology to China for waving Taiwan flag

By Simon Denyer and Xu Jing January 16 at 5:45 AM

TAIPEI - She is a 16-year-old singer from Taiwan, who performs with a South Korea girl band.

But on Saturday Chou Tzu-yu became the center of a political storm, after she forced to make a humiliating apology to China for daring to hold Taiwa's flag on Korean television.

The controversy has engulfed social media in Taiwan on the day that the island went to the polls to elect a new president, and has brought the issues of Taiwan's national identity and its unequal relationship with China back to center stage.

Outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou and next president Tsai Ing-wen united in support of the singer.

At a news conference after winning the election, Tsai said the incident had shaken Taiwanese society and angered many people, regardless of their political affiliation. "This particular incident will serve as a constant reminder to me of the importance of our country's strength and unity to those outside our borders," she said.

The singer had appeared on television holding a small Taiwanese flag alongside a Korean flag, only to be called out by a fellow Taiwanese pop star for supposedly supporting Taiwanese independence.

A 45% tariff sounds about right. Most of the Made in China stuff will still be made abroad, but at least we'll stop feeding the Chinese military machine.

That right there gets my vote.

I do think we need to find a way to employ our fellow citizens full tilt.

We can’t continue to leave between 40 and 90 million people sit idle.

It’s a terrible waste of manpower and the ability to get our federal debt under control.

We stop paying out so much, and start taking in more revenue.

Win/Win

A picture of video clip in question

Huang An, the man who started the whole controversy by publicizing the girl's behavior on social media. Ironically, he was also born in Taiwan.

With this move, he may think that he secured a nice gig at a big China TV station. Or slated to play a major character in a China's historical drama. However, if it turns out that it does more damage than good, he would get none.

China is none too thrilled about the election results my understanding is that China came out with statement, saying this is a Eternal matter and for outside entities, to stay out.

Tzuyu didn't do anything wrong - Huang An is a complete, self-aggrandizing jerk. Taiwan should take away his citizenship.

The Republic of China on Taiwan, despite what the Communist mainland says, despite what our opwn government says...who turned their back on Taiwan in the 1970s after 20 years of support...despite all of this, Taiwan has:

1, It’s own independent constitution.
2. It’s own, independent, freely elected government.
3. It’s own foreign policy.
4. Its own independent trade policy.
5. It’s own independent military (Army, Air Force, and NAvy)
6. It’s own independent Coast Guard.
7. It’s own well defined and defended borders.
8. Their own flag.

It also has the support of the US Congress and a US Law indicating that we will support them and not let them be taken by force.

All of these things define it as an independent nation, regardless of what others think or say.

I was privileged to travel to Taiwan as an Engineer and Program Manager for Micron on numerous occasions throughout the latter 1990s. The people there love America. They are hard working. And they are independent.

I support them and believe we should not abandon them to any kind of communist takeover.

What this girl did was not wrong. She has every right to show and express loyalt to and pride in her country.
