Alex Jaffe reports at NBC:
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. â Among conservatives, Donald Trump can typically do no wrong â until he attacks Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
On Saturday, Trump drew boos from a grassroots conservative crowd during remarks at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention for his attack on Cruzâs previously undisclosed loans.
âYou give a campaign contribution to Ted Cruz, you get whatever the hell you want,â he said, before boos erupted from the crowd.
Trump went on as the boos grew louder: âSay whatever you want, itâs okay, he didnât report his bank loans. Heâs got bank loans from Goldman Sachs, heâs got bank loans from Citibank, folks, and then he acts like Robin Hood?â
One man in the crowd, 71-year-old Air Force veteran Joe Bates, stood up and shouted angrily, wagging his finger at the candidate.
Trump continued: âYou know, say whatever you want, but it doesnât work that way.â
It was a stark illustration of the political perils the two candidates face in attacking each other as they sprint toward the early primary contests. Each risks losing ground among conservatives that havenât yet made up their minds between the two candidates, or inflaming their opponentâs base against them.
With that in mind, Cruz had, up until last week, carefully avoided taking on Trump directly.
But with two weeks till the high-profile Iowa caucuses, and the two candidates just points apart in most polls of Republicans there, this week the gloves came off â culminating in a number of explosive exchanges between the two at Thursdayâs debate over Cruzâs claim to U.S. citizenship and Trumpâs âNew York values.â

I stated facts.
You are the one stating opinion.
Did people stand up? Yes. Were they clapping? Yes.
Do people stand up and clap if they dislike the speaker? No.
You were the one reading their minds, not me.
lol. I just saw your pics.......Your hero is the Pope........what a liberal you are. Go away. You disgust me with your insults and liberalism. And probably a fake too. Did you use Google for those pictures?
Excuse me for failing to recognize your lack of credentials.
Dude, you’re a day late and a dollar short on this widdle piece of misleading Cruz propaganda: it’s already been posted AND refuted here about twenty seven gazillion times already.
You Cruz propagandists somehow think posting the same thing over and over again benefits your candidate. It doesn’t. It simply shows how weak and pathetic your position is that ya’ll have to post the same trivial crap over and over again. You’re not convincing anyone of anything; you’re just irritating people.
Oh and by the way... I wouldn’t get wrapped around the axle about something like this.
In reality, all of this stuff is meaningless. I don’t know how many elections cycles where I’ve seen reporting and commentary on how large a candidates crowds are and how the crowds reacts to them - only to see that candidate loose (sometimes badly). This stuff is at best only anecdotal, and more often it only has value in terms of entertainment.
We’ve seen the same thing with national polls in elections past. Remember Dean and Giuliani?
I have no idea what’s going to happen. In my view no sane person could possibly predict it - crowds and polls be damned.
Thanks-I don’t disagree with your post.
I am not wrapped around the axle about this—I just want the incident to be fairly portrayed.
Freepers used to be concerned about the truth and being balanced.
Too much knee jerking going on around here lately.
I think FEC will fine/punish him within few months.
It should be known in primary because in General Cruz will be damaged good. FEC is controlled by Dems.
I am not wrapped around the axle about thisâI just want the incident to be fairly portrayed.Unfortunately, that's never going to happen - here or anywhere else.
Fair or no, many headlines were produced by this event in SC. Almost all of them focused on the Booing. Was that fair? Maybe. Maybe not. But fairness doesn't matter in this sport. Remember, perception is 9/10ths of reality - and these headlines - for Trump fans - don't help.
On the upside for Trumpites, it's Saturday night. Who's really paying attention besides crazy people like me?
If this were Cruz going after Fiorina or Bush I wouldnt care, since I don’t care for either one of them. But I like Trump and I have always respected Cruz, I like him a lot I would walk over hot coals to vote for him..and I like Trump too, I agree with a lot of what he has to say, about Muslims, about illegals..When its someone you actually like its hard seeing them fight because its not hurting either one of them, its hurting the party because Clinton and Sanders are sitting back and will use this in the general election. This should be about stopping the Democrats from winning again because if they do we won’t have a Constitution left and that is what I fear the most
I hear you!
LoL. Yeah a few boo’ers out of hundreds, and Trump got a standing ovation in the end that was 60 seconds later.
Hey, Red....don’t go destroying a good ole misleading CRuzie thread with facts!

I guess coming to SC from “up north” as an adult, I had a different perspective, I was rather liberal myself at the time. It was no secret to me that Charleston was mostly Democrats, they elected Riley year after year. He was a decent mayor though. I lived there for 6 years and then moved upstate, and lived in Greenville for about 15 years. Where did you go to HS? the lowcountry and the upstate are so different. I really loved Charleston, just couldn’t make a living there lol
Agree. These two need to call a truce and unite forces.

It’s difficult if not impossible to “call a truce” when your back is filled with plunged knifes.
I love how he didn’t back down, even with the smattering of boos. Sundance at CT commented about the way that Trump is not afraid to own the down side. You can’t understate how true that observation is or how much of a virtue it is. This characteristic, perhaps more than any other, shows to those who are willing to see, that he is not a political animal, in the sense of choosing his positions on political expediency, but is motivated by principle.
He draws more people than Jeb Bush for certain. I’m not trying to be insulting when I say that, Iâm just using Bush as the bottom standard that no pol would want to emulate.
So Cruz is certainly higher than that, but does not seem to have the crowd drawing power of Trump.

Trump is a celebrity, living in the TMZ, low-information, baffle-them-with-bullshit era; Cruz is a serious candidate for President conducting a methodical campaign.
I am in agreement with your comments.
He said (something to the effect), “That’s okay. You can disagree, but it’s true.”
Didn’t miss a beat.
Some will call him egotistical. I call it having your own views and owning them.
Good for him. He’s a leader.
Swell.
I don’t care.
GO TRUMP!
