South Carolina: Trump Booed at Tea Party Convention for Attack on Cruz Goldman Sachs Loan

Alex Jaffe reports at NBC:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Among conservatives, Donald Trump can typically do no wrong — until he attacks Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

On Saturday, Trump drew boos from a grassroots conservative crowd during remarks at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention for his attack on Cruz’s previously undisclosed loans.

“You give a campaign contribution to Ted Cruz, you get whatever the hell you want,” he said, before boos erupted from the crowd.

Trump went on as the boos grew louder: “Say whatever you want, it’s okay, he didn’t report his bank loans. He’s got bank loans from Goldman Sachs, he’s got bank loans from Citibank, folks, and then he acts like Robin Hood?”

One man in the crowd, 71-year-old Air Force veteran Joe Bates, stood up and shouted angrily, wagging his finger at the candidate.

Trump continued: “You know, say whatever you want, but it doesn’t work that way.”

It was a stark illustration of the political perils the two candidates face in attacking each other as they sprint toward the early primary contests. Each risks losing ground among conservatives that haven’t yet made up their minds between the two candidates, or inflaming their opponent’s base against them.

With that in mind, Cruz had, up until last week, carefully avoided taking on Trump directly.

But with two weeks till the high-profile Iowa caucuses, and the two candidates just points apart in most polls of Republicans there, this week the gloves came off — culminating in a number of explosive exchanges between the two at Thursday’s debate over Cruz’s claim to U.S. citizenship and Trump’s “New York values.”

Yeah, Bernie has an outside shot, but he’s really easy to kill if Hillary needs to.

I realize that, I just always wondered why so many people who claimed they were Republican were very liberal. Something in the water is the best I could come up with. Especially Charleston.

I lived in Greenville, went to HS there and moved away a few years after HS. I live near there in the hills of NC now.

I don’t think Trump is that stupid, he knows how to use political capital, of which Sarah Palin has accumulated a lot (remember how frustrated so many FReepers were that she never used it to run?)

He’d probably be a bit of a cad towards her, in which he is an equal opportunity offender. He’s the alpha wolf. But to push Palin out of his picture if a reason appeared to bring Palin into his picture... I say nyet with a Russki view. Trump’s savvier than this.

That’s certainly not what I intended to state and not what I understand of the term “pulling a punch.”

Trump needs to back off on Cruz and let the chips fall where they may. I think they make the perfect team in 2016 and I hope the present episode doesn’t prevent that. They are both correct on the most important issue of this election cycle- immigration. Accordingly, they should be able to run on that issue alone and be the next president and vice president.

I was very excited about Trump as my #2 after Cruz, until Trump trashed Ted Cruz... I lost all respect for him (Trump) as of this moment.

I began rethinking my willingness to support Trump if Cruz didn't get the nomination when this started. Now I really doubt I could vote for him no matter who's on the other side.

Hey Franklin Graham is one of my Christian heroes for lack of a better word, he is not going across country to promote Trump. Not saying you were saying that btw, just adding my 2 cents

I understand he maybe cant endorse by name or party for charity laws whatever, but I have a monthly automatic donation from my bank account to Samaritans Purse, I am sure he is NOT for Trump

I would hope he was for Cruz and in fact would bet heavily he is for Cruz

The rest of them including Rubio are behaving terribly

He's the alpha wolf. ... in his version brand of himself. His fame is manufactured, HiTech. Remember.

In reality, he's an old geezer, and he's looking more like a catty old geezer. No offense to old geezers.

I watched the video—people got up and clapped.

They could have stayed seated and clapped.

But then, that would not fit your narrative.

By the way, your cooties remark is infantile. Trump regularly shakes hundreds of hands at each of his rallies.
That’s on video also.

Maybe you need to buy a vowel for your screenname.

I was thinking of the older fighting use of the term “pulling a punch.” Because punches push, to pull one would mean to lessen its force. Anyhow an old fighter like Trump could take it in a different manner. That’s why we have a world of eyes here.

But in fact, I would agree that he needs to evaluate where his potential friends are, and treat them more kindly than his sworn enemies. That said however, there is some room for punching in the biblical adage “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.” Kept within respectful bounds, it allows room for improvement. It is a balancing act.

I am not sure what an optimal Cruz role would be in the event Trump wins a nomination. Running mate is one possibility, but we have the NBC wildcard to deal with (no, Democrats won’t be as kind to the GOP candidacy as Republicans were to to the Democrat one). I could argue, at least academically, that a Cruz still in the Senate ready to advise and run interference and defend in the matter of upcoming court nominations (including USSC) might be QUITE an advantageous spot with Trump at the helm.

I have seen what I would describe as mostly very modest crowds. I have seen perhaps one or two photos of what I would describe as impressive rally events where there was a good size crowd.

He draws more people than Jeb Bush for certain. I’m not trying to be insulting when I say that, I’m just using Bush as the bottom standard that no pol would want to emulate.

So Cruz is certainly higher than that, but does not seem to have the crowd drawing power of Trump.

Or are you being a catty old geezer hater?

Old geezers sometimes had wonderful roles in the bible after they were supposedly spent. Think Moses....

Please remember that Trump referred to Tribe as brilliant, so perhaps Tribe is the kind of Judge Trump might appoint, along with his sister.

I am with Mark Levin

I’m finding myself in the same place. I really hope this blows over for the sake of the country. Trump may be the type who take no prisoners. It’s not clear he can win if that’s his style.

Part of the outcome depends on how Cruz takes this. Cruz seems to be slow to anger (q.v. his recent filmed treatment of hecklers) and might have a great temperament to just let Trump storms blow right on past.
