IF your very candidacy and identity rest on your supposed talent for victory, can you survive a defeat?
Can you continue to call yourself a winner if youâve been a loser â and if âloserâ is your favorite way of closing the book on someone, your final word, the workhorse in your brimming lexicon of slurs, exiting your mouth so reflexively that itâs essentially your exhalation, your carbon dioxide: âloser,â âloser,â âloser.â
Donald Trump has a problem that the other candidates for the Republican nomination donât. Heâs put an obstacle in his path that they havenât. He doesnât merely assert dominance. He claims something close to omnipotence. (Remember that laughable physicianâs report?)
Neither his image nor his ego leaves any room for a setback, any allowance for second place. And as Iowa draws near and several polls suggest the strong possibility that Ted Cruz will finish ahead of him there, itâs time to talk about what that would mean for a self-enamored emperor who pretty much insists on his own perfection â and who has built his brand on it.
At that point, Trump would no longer be a brilliant exception to the laws of political gravity. Heâd be someone whose lax management of his Iowa operation was laid bare, whose basic competence was in dispute. Heâd be one of many exhausted soldiers, girding himself for a muddy slog. Thatâs not the path he plotted, the myth heâs selling. Thatâs not how heâs rigged.
Other candidates can rack up a few disappointments. They havenât made their cases by pointing to their percentages, their ratings, their crowds. They donât draw such a sharp, unforgiving line between winners and losers. They donât equate being on top with being the best.

Do we really want to exchange one president with dubious citizenship for another?
All I hear is Trump's version of that hope thing Obama blathered about and got people all bug-eyed and then you ask the Trumpets what it is about Trump that would make him a good president and all they can say is he's tough and he will make America great again.
Nope, it is not one man who will perform all the economic miracles we need, it is us, the American people, not a loud-mouthed Ny-er continually telling us how rich he is.
It is not really hard to understand, if one is really paying attention.
You’re right. Jesse Ventura is a perfect comparison.
Dear FReepers.
Please quit giving the Crewznadian a hard time.
George W Bush is the only one elected since his dad who has not been called a narcissist. Maybe we should vote Jeb. /s
I live in the Pacific Northwest so by time the voting gets around to me it’s over. Nevertheless I can’t help myself from being totally interested - especially this year.
Have you seen this?
I don’t visit that site. Nor do I care what Beck does.
That site happens to be very interesting and Sundance has predicted the strategy of the GOPe to prevent anyone not of their choosing to be POTUS - despite any revolt by the voters fed up with the policies that put us 19 trillion in debt, etc. It is very well documented and so far quite prescient.
Yes.
TReep’s and Sundance’s work on the splitter strategy and rules changes make for an eye-opening look at smoke-filled rooms.
LOL
If you’re laughing at what Sundance has documented I’m rather surprised because it isn’t funny at all...in fact this sort of manuvering is what has caused the policies that are destroying the middle class under the guise of “being for a fiscally responsible government”.
The GOPe and the Democrats are basically the same party putting on a show for all us fools who actually believed they would go to DC and change things.
