Columbia, South Carolina (CNN)Ted Cruz on Friday offered an extended "apology" to those offended by his criticism of "New York values," but rather than back down from his controversial comments, he instead slammed the Empire State's "liberal politicians."
Asked by reporters whether he wanted to apologize for saying this week that Donald Trump, his main 2016 rival, "embodies New York values," Cruz turned the tables, laying out a three-minute riff on things for which he would rather apologize.
"Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio have all demanded an apology, and I'm happy to apologize," he told reporters after an event here. "I apologize to the millions of New Yorkers who have been let down by the liberal politicians in that state."
Cruz then proceeded, in detail, to attack Cuomo, the governor of New York, for his disapproval of fracking, the controversial energy extraction process, while also aiming his sights on de Blasio, New York City's mayor, for his policies on taxes, charter schools and policing.
"I apologize to all the cops and the firefighters and 9/11 heroes who had no choice but to stand and turn their backs on Mayor de Blasio because Mayor de Blasio over and over again stands with the looters and the criminals rather than the brave men and women of blue," he said.

And they had a chance to help upstate NY with fracking, and of course they cut off that escape route, too.
I have to agree that was an excellent ‘apology’.
He’s learning from Trump perhaps, never apologize and double down instead. But I think he had that personality even before this.
“Trombies” is a cheap shot.
Nice!
Okay maybe. But not from my non N. Y. Perspective ;)
“Actually you do get to choose. Thats what living in America is all about. If you choose to live under liberals, do not be upset when bad things happen to you.”
That’s why I escaped Mexifornia, even though i had to leave jobless. it was worth it.
I left with my kid, a couple suitcases and fedexed the important stuff. The rest went to friends and the dump. Life was better by far within a year than the one I’d left in NY. And kept getting better in ALL aspects. Hasn’t stopped yet.
Oh no! But wouldn't it be cool if Trump got one of the big States like NY or CA.? .....I know but a fella can dream.
And ensured poverty for the serfs after destroying the logging industry and every other industry through regulation and taxation.
Well played, Mr. Cruz. Well played.
Only to idiots.
Rush said the GOP bused in a bunch of people to the debate to boo Trump.
Thats Ted! Straight On... Dead On..
And they had a chance to help upstate NY with fracking, and of course they cut off that escape route, too.

LOVE this.
Lumps all the liberals together in the same sentence. Given that Donald Trump's two best friends on Twitter today were Laurence Tribe and Hillary Clinton, I'd say Cruz is, once again, over the target.
Big mistake!
Rush nailed it on his radio show this morning.
Of course TRUMP KNEW what he meant, the socialist progressive socialist culture in New York was the subject, NOT the bravery of their safety officers.
TRUMP does have his flaws, but his anti-establishment dedication more than compensate for his occasional gaffe.
I still plan to vote for him.
If that is the case it’s wrong.
Wow. I don’t see how this whole thing ends up being good for Cruz. I am very much a supporter of his. But this was hugely dumb. You guys can dream all you want but his New York comments were disastrous for his campaign. And the video won’t turn it around in my opinion.
Too bad. Really too bad.
The problem is that Ted Cruz can’t win a national election. He just doesn’t have the personality, looks, voice, or charisma to win. No force of personality. He can’t win; Trump will.
...want to see Senator Ted Cruz debate Mrs. Clinton.
He can’t even debate Rubio, How will he beat Hillary in a debate? He won’t.
