Tonightâs GOP debate was Ted Cruzâs night. He went right after Donald Trump multiple times, but in a way that came across as forceful and informed, but not nasty. He also fended off a pretty vigorous attack from Marco Rubio. His strongest points came early and against Trump, when the audience would be the largest.
Trump was runner-up. He had a good moment on Cruzâs slam on âNY Values,â but Iâm not sure how defending NY values plays outside NY. His performance will confirm pre-existing views of him.

[[Agree, Ted Cruz is clear winner.
Second place? A total surprise for me. I don’t care much for Obama-hugger Chris Christie, but he did have an especially good night.
Trump still argues largely on emotional arguments and generalities. He would do well to do some more homework.
Rubio is good, but a little to slick, and way too snotty.
Jeb gave his best performance of all the debates. Yes, it was truly marginal, but still his best.
Kasich is remarkable in that he’s still on the A list. Why?
Dr. Carson was as likable as ever. The GOP President simply must find a cabinet level position for him.]]
The only minor quibble I have is with the last line, and not because the statement is untrue, but because people don’t really understand where he stands on issues- Sure he comes across as ‘likeable’ and what you said is true, but, IF people understood exactly where carson stood on issues there wouldn’t be anything to like- He’s for death panels, gun control, climate change regulations, and many other liberal positions- He actually thinks there should be a panel to decide whether it is ‘viable or not to keep certain people alive medically’ and he would gladly direct women to abortion clinics-
that is BS. Both were being silly. But Cruz got the citizen thing straightened out. And that in itself was Cruz’s goal.
Cruz won the birther round, then Trump knocked him out on the New York values exchange.
Cruz got beat so bad he clapped.
Cruz is my choice. However the two Trump fans I watched the debate with also thought Cruz won, Trump second, Rubio/Christy tied for third.
When Kraut Say’s Trump won the debate that’s huge! LOL!
Trump has never needed live debate skills. His expertise is in combatting the media with planned revelations, and sincere in-your-face pronouncements that most think but cannot say in the Liberal media. Anyone standing near Ted will look less-polished at it, because he is among the best there is, inside politics or out... but that doesn't change the fact that Trump is working on it, and showing fruits for his labors in a remarkably short time.... which is likely the result of another of Trump's areas of true genius, namely, finding extremely talented people from seemingly nowhere, and assigning them the tasks at hand to perform brilliantly. This is yet another gift/skill that the entire GOP needs to pick up from Trump, desperately.
How many times has Trump insulted various people. It is so many times the media has quit reporting it. Cruz should have been more careful—you leave an opening and words get put in your mouth. The media will remember this. At least Cruz knew he was beaten on that point—political views in NYC are definitely very far to the left.
He was on, he was the 4th one interviewed.
I must have missed him on my potty run.
Did he say anything of substance?
Cruz was particularly praised by the participants for his back-and-forth with Donald Trump over his natural-born citizenship.
I changed the channel on that. Thought he was only doing Rubio and Christie.
I am dying to ask commentators if they would really trust DT to appointment and federal and SC judges.
Tonight we started thinking that a Trump/Carson ticket would be better. Two people who are clearly in it for the country and not for themselves. Also neither has margin loans at Goldman Sacks.

Had a good laugh at your potty run being addressed to someone named depenzz!
LOL, good sense of humor there.
Who cares, even donnie won’t carry ny.
I thought that Trump looked subdued. I think he realizes that his birther attack was a serious error born of desperation, and now he is stuck with it. But it did get him Cruz’s NY values unforced error in response. If I was Cruz I would have just apologized for the poor choice of words, not tried to justify it.
Agreed...
Cruz is smart. You know he had EVERY angle covered on the birther thing and delivered a beautiful response to Trump.
But then Cruz fell apart on the New York question and Trump flattened him.
This debate showed us the difference between Trump and Cruz:
- Cruz is the brain, the polished intellect, Cruz wins on hard work and studiousness.
- Trump is the natural, the rock-star, he wins on charisma and emotional intelligence.
Both are amazing candidates and despite the war of words going on right now it would be blessing if either man were our President.
Cruz had my vote before the debate. He still has it.
I'm so glad Rafael stooped that low. How low can you go?
Trump might not know much about Buckley, that his dad was from Brazos, TX and mom from New Orleans and they never lived in New York, homeschooled all their 10 children, while living mostly in South America and England, though did own homes in both CT and South Carolina, which Bill Buckley loved and spent as much time there as possible!
After 8th grade, Bill Buckley attended boarding school in England, so not much NY values seeped into Bill's character.
Devoutly Catholic, Buckley was for traditional values of life and traditional marriage, again, he veered sharply with the very liberal values of his fellow New Yorkers, who all seem to catch the liberal notion that the rest of the country agrees with them!
