Trump hits back at Cruz: Anyone who wants to knock “New York values” needs to go through me

Second look at Trump?

Donald Trump reacted to criticism from Republican presidential primary challenger Cruz Wednesday, saying that he equates "New York values" to "energy" that helped the city to persevere after the September 11th attacks.

"One thing it means is energy. You know, when the World Trade Center got hit, we rebuilt that World Trade Center and we got through and very few places in this world could have gotten through what we went through. I mean, I was so proud of New York, the World Trade Center, these two massive, 110 story buildings come down, thousands of people killed. I've never seen anything like it in my life. And immediately the rebuilding started," Trump told conservative Radio host Howie Carr.

In a separate interview Wednesday on Bloomberg News' "All Due Respect," Trump further addressed the attack, saying, "When you knock New York, you've got to go through me. New York is an amazing place with amazing people." The more I think about Cruz's "New York values" attack on Trump this week, the more I think it's a silly mistake (and not just because I'm biased due to my upbringing). Here's one reason why:

You can understand why Cruz did it. When you're making a play for Iowa and the deep south in a Republican primary, you can't go wrong needling the godless sodomites of NYC. Problem is, the race won't be won or lost in Iowa and the deep south. Ironically, it's the blue states that may decide the nominee because they come later in this year's primary schedule, which means they can follow winner-take-all rules for awarding their delegates instead of awarding them proportionally. Even if Cruz wins Iowa and cleans up in the SEC states, he's likely to lead fairly narrowly over the rest of the...

Isn’t NY a super blue state? I’m a lifelong VA guy, and I can tell you, Northern VA is filled with subhuman dem voters; filth garbage trash, vermin that needs exterminating. I can admit that as easily as I admit the sun rises in the east. If NY is super blue, then the same logic applies. If they are not super blue, then I apologize.

Are you nuts. That’s been being talked about and documented out the wazoo for months. You think that’s going to bother any thinking person?

Keep the faith, see if you can sling the mud. I’m going to root for the best chance America has. And I’m going to root for Cruz too because I think he has much he can do for his country even if I don’t think this is the cycle for him to be President.

NY is progressive though.

But do you think Cruz’s comments were appropriate at this time?

If I were in his corner, I might be able to find a way to give Ted Cruz a pass for what maybe didn't come out quite like he wanted it to.

It happens on the campaign trail, even for a master debater like Ted Cruz.

Instead, I'm starting to feel sorry for him and I hate that.

I see Ted much differently now than when he first ran for the Senate, but I keep hoping he'll live up to my first impressions of him instead of my worst doubts.

Oh well. Just have to wait and see how it plays out...

You mean the Same NY that voted for Como, And a list of all the most evil politicians in the entire country.

I would say that NY values are among the worst there are.

Boy Cruz blew it with this statement. Doesn’t his wife work for Goldman Sachs? Aren’t they in NY. And what about that private meeting Ted had in NY City with some PAC.

???? Definitely don’t like NYC liberalism, it’s up to the voters to determine if Trump is a liberal or not.

Yep, that’s another thing. Trump could win the liberal blue states without selling out.

Precisely! Sub-human filth in need of extermination, just as soon as you can pry them off the end of the kenyan’s little giggle-pin.

There are large inner cities in NY/NJ. To outsiders they define the States. The county I live in and the surrounding 5 are very conservative. The Demoncrats have been in control in NY for decades and there is the whole favors owed thing operating.

However Brooklyn where I was born is changing and most of the people I know and my relatives are very enthusiastic about Trump, even my 96 year old aunt. She says no more Democrats. As an aside she has been voting Republican for the last 25 years or more. Early in NY’s history there was a large union presence and people of that generation voted Democratic. Obama however taught many people many things. I have hopes for NY. DeBlasio may finish teaching them about the consequences of elections.

I think like many of the people in America NYers were content to elect politicians like they rooted for their ball teams. That needed to change and I think it has. The problem is the large cities which overwhelm the state. If you watch the election maps the majority of NY goes Republican but NY overwhelms them, just like Newark, Jersey City, Camden, Elizabeth and several others sink us. California has the same issue with the Northern counties openly in revolt.

I lived in NY for 23 years and the majority of people I met were hard working, loved their families and country, tried to do their best. I don’t actually know anybody but my airport limo driver who voted for Obama and he’s sorry now.

Many of us New Yorkers could be offended by your rash generalization.

I worked on Wall Street, just blocks from the WTC, knew people who died their and their parents. I am shocked a thoughful guy like Cruz showed such regional prejudice.

I have lived in five states from the northeast south, southwest and west, and everyone I met I have treated as a fellow American. Yeah they heard my northeast accent and mostly we treated eachother as fellow Americans. Too bad Ted. When I lived in Texas I was a Texan, and I would punch or choke out anyone who Messed With Texas. Sorry Ted you don’t feel we all bleed Red White and Blue.

I worked for Rudy Guiliani’s mayoral campaigns even though he is way more liberal than me. Rudy was a great leader, and Mayor.

Nothing wrong with Rudy’s New York ways, he took a city that suffered the loss of thousands of folks, injuries to first responders and over $100 billion in property and business losses just the first year alone.

I watched with heartache the endless funerals, the endless digging for human remains. We all bleed Red White and Blue. My Father and Uncle’s who served like me in the Navy and Army, saved America lives and won WWII for all Americans. And on the day they died they were buried with an American Flag, with honor guards not with a New York Flag.

Funny thing My wife Is a big Cruz Supporter, sent him several contributions. I had hoped he and Trump could be cordial and we would see an Trump/ Cruz ticket, or maybe Trump would appoint him a Supreme court justice.

this remark doesn’t make sense given his wife worked for Goldman Sachs, you don’t get any more New York than that do you. I am sure she isn’t happy about how this remark reflects on her.

You know sometimes you say something you wish you could take back? This is one of those events.

True.

It will also be up to the voters to determine if Cruz’s comments about NY values were appropriate or not.
