Eight days ago, Donald Trump floated the idea that Ted Cruz might cause Republicans some legal headaches if he won the GOP presidential nomination because he was born in Canada -- albeit to a mother who was and is a U.S. citizen.
Today, Cruz's citizenship -- and the questions surrounding it -- is the single most dominant issue in the Republican race and has, without question, slowed Cruz's momentum in Iowa and nationally.
It's a perfect case study in both how Trump attacks and how he's able to so effectively sidetrack his opponents.

Your kids is an American.
From Vattel that the Birthers love to quote...
Your settlement is your country of citizenship. So your child born abroad is still a natural born American.
May also be a citizen of the country of birth if they are a jus solis country.
Ҥ 218. Settlement.
Settlement is a fixed residence in any place, with an intention of always staying there. A man does not, then, establish his settlement in any place, unless he makes sufficiently known his intention of fixing there, either tacitly or by an express declaration. However, this declaration is no reason why, if he afterwards changes his mind, he may not transfer his settlement elsewhere. In this sense, a person who stops at a place upon business, even though he stay a long time, has only a simple habitation there, but has no settlement. Thus, the envoy of a foreign prince has not his settlement at the court where he resides.
The natural, or original settlement, is that which we acquire by birth, in the place where our father has his; and we are considered as retaining it, till we have abandoned it, in order to choose another. The acquired settlement (adscititium) is that where we settle by our own choice.”
Except for his Harvard Professor Lawrence Tribe...and possibily himself if we are to believe a report of an interview he gave in 2012.
The rule is pretty clear- anyone born to a natural born citizen- regardless of where they are born, can run for president provided they meet the other two requirements- ie lived here 14 years- and the other one I can’t remember right now- Cruz’s mother was a citizen when she gave birth to Ted- that’s the end of it until a court steps in and defines the rule once and for all- there is no rule stating that he can not run for president because all three requirements have been met
Voters want a fighter this year. They do not want to study the Fonzi character. Many are not old enough to even know who he is. I am discouraged reading just how many people who have followed Cruz for years never knew he was born in Canada. Now the loan. It is not about what is true or legal. It is voter perception. Is/was he hiding things? Can he be trusted? Most people are not political junkies like us. He needs to fire his campaign mgr.
[[If I am is paris with the wife and she has our kid, how does that preclude them in any way from being American?]]
Exactly- what matters is that the parents have declared their citizenship and that is what determines their child’s citizenship UNTIL the child is old enough to move away and gain their own citizenship in another country-
He is a Native American, born in North America.A lote of Indians born in Canada just walked across the line with no problem. His mother is a CITIZEN born in the USA. Trump is a real jerk. Cruz has it over the trump on all the issues so Donald had to make a “trumped-up” charge.
Which certainly evidences this is not a new issue or unexpected by Cruz....point made.
[[I am discouraged reading just how many people who have followed Cruz for years never knew he was born in Canada.]]
What has that got to do with anything?
I personally thought it was stupid and would go away... Til I saw that little tidbit in the ARG poll that said 46% of IA GOPprimary voters said that someone "born outside this country shouldn't be president," and only 32% of same voters knew Cruz was not born here. Now do you see why it has stuck?
Why not tell it to the voters at the start!
Well they were on defense for more than a week BEFORE this, with the Rubio Gang of Eight debate.
Why weren't the "Native Americans" in the US in 1790 considered natural born citizens?
Why were slaves who were born on US soil in 1790 not considered Natural Born Citizens?
Oh please. Trump stepped in nothing. It’s Teddy’s poll numbers in IA that sank like a stone after this, and I explained above why that worked for Trump.
Sorry, that ammo dump will be blown up by then.
Trump has a lot of negatives but he does not shy away from them. They both have stinky feet. Voters more likely to accept candidate if he admits things up front. Especially the fact that Ted is Evangelical. He has a higher standard to not appear dishonest with loans, anything.
if it doesn’t make him ineligible, why is it even an issue?
Personally, I think when Ted went all Glenn Beck/”put on the armor of God” stuff that really scared off a lot of Christians who don’t see themselves as “holy rollers.” I think polls down the line will start to show that he actually lost evangelical support there.
What's the matter....because the fight hasn't begun or played as you want it's time to get your pants in a knot? Cruz is ahead in Iowa....he's maintaining that lead.....why take shots in the air when your opponent just hit the mat.
