Donald Trump says Ted Cruz should leave the presidential race

WASHINGTON— Donald Trump stepped up his attack on Sen Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run for president Wednesday calling for Cruz to drop out of the race.

Donald J Trump
@realDonaldTrump
"Sadly, there is no way that Ted Cruz can continue running in the Republican Primary unless he can erase doubt on eligibility. Dems will sue!"

Trump recently warned the GOP that if Cruz becomes the nominee ,the party would be risking the White House. Trump claims Democrats would hold up the election in court, litigating whether or not Cruz is considered a natural born citizen.

Trump’s views on Cruz’s eligibility have changed throughout the campaign.

The first time he was asked about Cruz’s Canadian birth in 2013, Trump, the loudest ‘birther’ questioning the legitimacy of President Barack Obama citizenship, wasn’t sure if Cruz was qualified. Trump was still not convinced last March, months before announcing his own bid for president. By September, Trump said he was confident Cruz had the legal standing to run.

Trump knows that if it gets down to a 2 man race Cruz will eviscerate him in debates.

That's a misnomer. The best debater does not necessarily win the election. It's usually the debater with the snappier sound bites.

For example, Mondale out-debated Reagan but Reagan eviscerated him with one soundbite ("I will not make an issue of age in this campaign...") and so nobody remembers the rest of the debates where Mondale clearly had the better overall performance.

Not that it would have mattered anyhow. Reagan would have been re-elected even if he did nothing but drool at the podium. I can't remember ever switching my vote on account of a debate. If my candidate does poorly, I'll spin it that he won the debate regardless.

Cruz started the cynical jabs with his 'name on airplane' attack on Trump - Class envy stuff. Trump never followed up with his answer to the reporter about Cruz's citizenship until Cruz started to speak out. Check the timeline. Cruz figured he could take his jabs without getting hit back.

Trump is also hitting Cruz with his attachments to the donor class and with Cruz's sudden 'build the wall' campaign rhetoric.

Trump is the only candidate that is not controlled by the donor class. For all the religious reasons you may like Cruz - and rightfully so - this election needs to be about what Trump is about. And yes, it means taking a chance.

You are correct on all those points. The election officials are the ones that control ballot access, and there is only a requirement that candidates or their parties certify they are qualified.

The constitution anticipates the voters/electors will elect an unqualified person. See 20th amendment. It talks about what to do in case of unqualified president-elect. The first authority in examination is Congress, after all the election process has run.

Meanwhile, if the people want to vote for an unqualified candidate, they are free to. Ahhh, the smell of freedom!

Courts really hate to meddle in the political process. If an unqualified candidate can pawn himself off on the public as qualified, more power to him.

With regard to my opinion about Cruz being qualified, is there a possibility that my opinion is wrong? Yes.

Is there a chance that a court would find him ineligible? Yes.

I arrived at my opinion by way of if Obama is qualified to be president, so is Ted. That combined with Ted was born to American mother satisfies me. I believe Ted was born with his citizenship, thus he’s good to go.

I also realize that there are plenty of people who do not agree with me on that, and it is possible that their opinion is legally correct, and mine isn’t. There really is no way for me to know for sure.

And I think that, unfortunately for Ted, this is going to remain an issue until it is resolved by a court one way or the other.

I don’t agree with calling people who question his eligibility stupid or kooks or whatever. There are people who call me stupid for my opinion, and I don’t agree with them either.

What I do think is stupid is to leave this matter unresolved in such a way that we could get blind sided with it at a time when we have no recourse. That, to me, seems incredibly risky.

Every single lawsuit on the NBC issue, and there were dozens, brought against Obozo was dismissed for lack of standing.

“Grayson does not now, nor will he ever have standing to bring this suit.”

Are you a lawyer?

“Alan worked as an economist for two years following graduation. He then decided to continue his education, returning to Harvard to pursue a law degree. Alan simultaneously received a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School and a Masters of Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government. After law school, he clerked for two judges who would later join the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia.”

Hey may be a scumbag but he’s not a stupid one.

Yes, the best debater does not necessarily win in an election. However, a candidate who ends up looking ignorant or as a fool on stage almost ALWAYS LOSES.

Cruz will have no problem making Trump look like “the Dunce that Trump is” when the competition is down to a few.

Please show us where Trump is imploding??

I agree. It sure looks like Cruz is being buried in his own bull$hit because he didn't immediately and prudently deal with the birth issue.

Kind of like the analogy of the leaky faucet eventually progressing to becoming a busted pipe.

"EMPTY SUIT who lacks substance and can only offer innuendo and bluster."

Evidently in sufficient quantity to lead the race easily.

Trump has no incentive to sue. He is getting everything he wants out of the accusation alone. He put a cap on Cruz's support. Where that cap is, we'll know about the 1st of March.

Trump is the ultimate corrupt politician. He is a crony capitalist and bought politician all rolled into one. Trump will advance no ones concerns but Trump’s. He has figured out a way to pay himself instead of someone else for the favors he needs.

He is a fraud to the marrow of his bones.

Trump is more Reagan than Cruz. Reagan never carried his religion on his sleeve - and Reagan was married more than once. Reagan was more of a social moderate in that he said, "Just say no to drugs" and never believed one should "antagonize those living on the fringe."

Reagan solidified social security and put 100% tariffs on Japanese electronics. But more than anything else Reagan believed in the Constitution of providing for the 'general Welfare' by placing America first - not global corporate interests.

Cruz for sure is a social conservative, a religious social conservative. But Reagan was not. Cruz is not any of the above things that Reagan was.

-- And I think that, unfortunately for Ted, this is going to remain an issue until it is resolved by a court one way or the other. --

It's an issue until his place in the election contest expires, win, lose, or drop out.

-- I don't agree with calling people who question his eligibility stupid or kooks or whatever. --

Cruz hasn't used any name calling. I'm just saying that if something is settled (sun rises in the east), and somebody holds the opposite (sun rises in the west), well, there is something about that "sun rises in the west" person, know what I mean?

-- What I do think is stupid is to leave this matter unresolved in such a way that we could get blind sided with it at a time when we have no recourse. --

I wouldn't call it stupid. It's a calculated risk. There is no way to resolve it outside of the political process, the one we are in the middle of. A court is not going to interfere with a major race.

When anyone needs to blatantly mis-represent to make a point they cannot be taken seriously.

That's a good line, worthy of being a tagline.

All of the dozens of lawsuits that were brought against Bozo were brought by highly educated lawyers. They were all, dozens of them, dismissed for lack of standing.

It really is an interesting and perplexing situation.

There doesn’t appear to be anyway for Cruz to resolve this legally on his own, nor does there appear to be a way for anyone else to resolve it or help him resolve it by way of a suit prior to the general election being over and Cruz having won.

Only then does it seem it could find its way before a court.

I don’t have much knowledge on a so called declaratory judgment, but it seems like Ted would have to somehow go before a court being both the plaintiff and the defendant at the same time, and I’m not even sure such a thing exists TBH.

Madnnly then does it seem it could find its way before aess!
