A suburban mega-church's plan to create a small community center in the Hollygrove-Dixon neighborhood has sparked racially charged opposition among the mostly black residents whose homes surround the proposed site.
Celebration Church and its representatives are outsiders looking to impose their will on the neighborhood, a lawyer for opponents of the project told the City Planning Commission Tuesday (Jan. 12). "None of them look like the clients that I represent in this neighborhood," he said.
Residents said they felt harassed by the influx of outsiders knocking on doors and asking to talk about the development.
"They are forcing their way into my neighborhood," said Willy Parker, who lives near the proposed community center.
Representatives for the church, nearly all of whom were white, countered that they were merely engaging in the outreach efforts that the city requires for developers who need special permits. They insisted they were polite but were greeted with doors slammed in their face.

Likely the local church don’t want to lose any customers. So they are fighting to keep the white folks out. Black pastors typically own their own church and do quite well.
It reminds me of Spike Lee complaining about white people moving into Brooklyn, which is known as ‘gentrification.’
Blacks moving in means the area is ‘going down.’

The people in the neighborhoods of Manchester didn’t look like the Islamic terrorists either...

HUD apparently now has a program to use foreclosed houses to put Section 8 folks into ‘white enclaves’ - destroy the suburbs basically.
What a crock. Celebration was my church when I lived in NOLA and a good percentage of the people there “look like” those in Hollygrove. It is a fully integrated church. Must be the Hollygrove residents are are afraid of mixed races worshiping together.
I think it must be some local pastors who don’t want Mt. Zion Baptist to lose members.

Was it Manchester or Murfeesboro? I thought the latter. Or did they both have an issue?
The meeting on hate crimes with Eric Holder’s man the moslsems held in June 2014 was in Manchester, TN...

I wasn’t aware about what happened with the DOJ in Manchester until now.
There’s an area near me that developers have gone in and begun to ‘gentrify’ it. Old abandoned houses have been knocked down and new houses built. There are now fewer trash filled empty lots and old houses with sofas on the porch. The area is beginning to look so much better.
The residents are furious! Their neighborhood is getting too expensive. Huh? It makes no sense

Complete and utter irony here.
Even more ironic is how white gentrification is now pushing blacks (particularly middle class and upper middle class blacks) out into the suburbs. There’s a big fight in DC over a black congregation not wanting bike lanes in front of their Cap Hill church. Because all the congregants now live in PG County and the bike lanes would take away their parking spots for Sunday services.
